Obi: KQ accounts for the hedges through their balance sheet. Check their website out. The 'full' hit was not apparent coz fuel prices were still 'high' on 30 Sep 2008 (date of the unaudited results/balance sheet).

That said, some of the hedges would have burnt off (expired/paid off) over the next 6 months. KQ will release results (per other SKerians) in mid-late May 2009. By that time... more of the unfavourable hedges will be off the books.

****By the time the AGM rolls around (Sep/Oct 2009)... they may have written off/down most of the 'bad' hedges.

Internationally, airline stocks have sunk cauze of the swine flu. Investors expect travel warnings to eat into passenger numbers and this will have a negative impact on the bottom line of arlines. KQ may be spared the agony if the flu is confined between Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. However, data coming in indicate that we are at level 4 of the epidemic and the worst is not yet over.

I read in some business paper that KQ is disposing of/selling two of its smaller Boeing a/c's to Czech at 3M dollar each.Could this earning be ploughed back into annual results to be announced soon so that we can expect some good dividend?Experts?

When do we expect the results given that last yr they were released around 5th May I think? Should one expect the same KES 1.75 per share?

@ Jerry,

Last year's results were actually released on 30th May so its likely results will be out towards the end of this week.

@Pierce: Asante but is it official (29 May). I think they may push it to 3 June (Friday) then the directors can fly straight to Mombasa.

@ Impunity: They have 2 SAABs which they kept after the Douala 737 crashed & the Embraers were delayed. The SAABs were used for Kisumu & Mombasa. The sold their airbuses many, many years ago. KQ is an all-Boeing fleet except for the E-190s.

It aint really a loss. If u nderstand what unrealised fuel hedging costs means.

Am not trying to look down on anybody and if I do,I apologize in advance.

When someone says the unrealized hedge loss of Sh 7.5 billion by KQ is only for records sake,I see a desperate person who is willing against will that KQ is still viable and financially strong simply because he holds a huge lot of the same.

Sample this:

Mr. Richard Nuttal, the KQ airline’s Commercial director, tendered his resignation on Thursday. He quit a day before the announcement of the financial results. Sources said the director was sacked after he differed with the management over the rationale of the fuel hedging process that has hurled the airline into deep financial mess. (Source: Local Media)

Wishing away losses does not make them go away. Count your losses in KQ and run to a favorable counter when you still can.

@Hi-lo

Closing your eyes to the truth won’t make it go away, neither is throwing good money at bad money.

Someone once said,They walk among us,the problem is that they portend to give advice, never want to learn from past mistakes, but the worst part is that they reproduce.

Don’t be too hash on Hi-lo.

@ Statboy

The world's airlines will collectively lose $9 billion this year — nearly double the previous projections — and face a slow recovery as the economic crisis saps air travel and cargo demand,an industry body warned today.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents 230 airlines worldwide, increased its loss estimate from the $4.7 billion it forecast in March, reflecting a 'rapidly deteriorating revenue environment.'

Things can only get worse in the case of KQ.

Recovery would start maybe five years from now if not ten.
