The challenge with the A380 is that airports have to be have the gear for passengers to disembark efficiently. I do not see any thing else that is special

Nothing special at all..
Can JKIA handle A380s?

I think Emirates flys A380s to JKIA. but they are planning to stop production of the jumbo.

I think some parties might see A380 as preferred air cargo freighter or even in moving heavy/bulky military artillery from one point to another...

Just my two cents though...

EK flies the 777 & 340 to Jkia.

Handling a diversion can be done in nbo. No dramas.
380 requires a stronger PCN vs ACN —basically pavement strength which we have.

Also requires double jet bridges for the Lower deck and upper deck which we don’t have but can make do with stairs.

I watched a video about the dar airport managers talking about a diversion like its a big thing 🤣🤣 ati it is only capable of landing in Jozi and now in dar 🤣🤣

What's the length of JKIA's runway?
How much runway does a fully loaded A380 need to take off?
KQ has an all-Boeing fleet but wouldn't extra capacity [esp fresh cargo] to Europe be beneficial for Kenya and KQ?
KQ flights, if well-priced, to London/Amsterdam could fly full almost all year round. Or so I think.

Only B777. The A380 landing in DA&R is not a big thing as such. A380 is slightly bigger than B747. In fact Airbus developed this plane in response to B747.

B747 lands at JKIA every other day. KLM flies it to JKIA, sometimes the cargo one. Lufthansa used to fly to NBO with a B747 years ago.

We have Beluga and Dreamlifter for that purpose if required....tested and ready.

The A380 landed in Dar due to bad weather in Mauritius, which was the final destination. So it's not an accomplishment for Dar as the article portrays! This plane needs 550 passengers to fill up. I don't think any African city aside from maybe Joburg can offer those numbers on a single route.

London. Cargo + Pax.
There are at least 2 daily flights NBO-LHR using a 747/777 (BA) + 777 (KQ). Many more pax use EK, ET, TK and QR to fly to London. London/LHR also offers decent connections to USA, Paris, Ireland, etc if KQ can codeshare with other airlines like Delta (USA), AF (France), etc.

I have used TK despite the odd hours and longer total flight/travel time coz of a much lower price vs KQ/BA.

Can KQ capture more of the EK, ET, TK and QR traffic to LHR?
Plus more fresh cargo?
Doesn't KQ/BA run extra flights during the busy summer/touristy season?

That said, perhaps the longer/larger 747-8 instead of a A380?

Of course, only if it makes FINANCIAL sense which was tossed out the window during Project Mawingu.

The aircraft industry is moving away from the titanic like planes. Production of A380 is closing with only Emirates order book that is keeping them alive. The Boeing 747 is also out of production. The only 747's that are remaining on the order book are for the POTUS presidential fleet. If they were to do this they most likely will have to increase frequency rather than purchase a jumbo or A380.

True....The jumbo planes are unsustainable. 777s 787s A340s & A350s are the long range planes in business.

Actually if they needed a plane the size of a jumbo they would have to buy a 777x. That is either the 777-8 with a seating configuration of 365 seats or a 777-9 with a seating configuration of 414. Which is averagely what a typical 747 has. Problem is that the 777-9 is yet to go into production and its order book will take years given the first delivery is next year December. That said they could buy an old jumbo but still make losses.

Well not really. They have a great product in the A350

If demand is truly growing for KQ, it should lease a 777 from EK until the planes leased to Oman/Turkey are returned. [Were they leased to Oman/Turkey or sold outright?]

I look at some of the comments on this thread and wonder what people will say when the Open Offer is announced. There was the first chance for all and sundry to make a quick kill during restructure when some folks here swore that KQ will touch KES 2.10 but it did not, rather it went up to KES 18.75 within seven days of relisting!!! Now there will be clueless others waiting for KQ to dip sub Open Offer price projected at KES 5.00 by the exchange bar, but I could bet you my entire earthly belongings that these persons will be shocked to see KES 21 or higher print in the run up to book closure. Thank me later/soon
