"Our countries!"

Be owned? Vassals? Puppets? Someone's property?

Or be a sovereign state or cease to exist?

There are some to whom 'sovereignty' means a lot much more than political rhetoric. Much respect to them. For bravery, freedom, liberty, destiny!

(But in the end this American thesis and Russian anti-thesis will bring synthesis - must not loose sight of that.)

Who loses if Russia implodes?

And they answer themselves - "No one wins if Russia's economy falls apart.".

Germany, is the key. It was seen way back in March but it was 'too sweet to stop'. But some Germans had wisdom and foresight to think straight.

'Our countries' ,,, the price to pay to burn your next door neighbour's house to please someone across the ocean. Cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Let it burn!

Muriel..

If you look at history, you will realise that the two countries have been bullies in Europe. that is Russia and Germany.
The rest of Europe are never comfortable with Germany but they prefer the Germans to the Russian.
When German thinks expansion, Russia has always been there to nip such growth in the bud. their camaraderie is simply because they know their position in Europe and they exploited it for their growth. not that they are bossom buddies.

Fact: Under the hood, to the normal guy on the street, the rest of Europe is uncomfortable with Germany as the power house, and jittery with Russia.

Fact: The current problems in Russia cannot be attributed to Germany.
The US is behind it but using Saudi Arabia, and their own, fracking, industry.
Putin cannot point at Merkel.. He can only ask for forgiveness the number of times he has brought menacing dogs with his meetings with Merkel and then beg her to talk to her friends about the sanctions.

At the same time, lack of business and a slow growth in the German economy is good for Britain, France and Italy. Greece would be cheering at that.

It is an intricate balancing act where Russia looses more, German is kinda checked, the UK and France feel important and Uncle Sam comes out an inch at the top, screwing everybody and making future enemies.

The house of Saud keep the middle east to themselves.. world moves on.

Poundfoolish,

You have described it as I would have too.

But does it (the camaraderie) matter? Maybe or maybe not for 'our countries'. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, they mindlessly opine and so it goes and the world indeed moves on.

They will risk to pay the Mistral penalties buts its ok because Uncle Sam has said so. They will risk undermining their farmers because Uncle Sam insists. And that inch is so important to uncle sam ,,,,, you better not get in the way!

It is not just about Uncle Sam. It is about History and learning from it.
Uncle Sam is just taking advantage for his own good.

That could be why Russia is keen to break the jinx. The foredoom of repeating history. To failure. That is why my heart is with them.

Seems like its game over for Putin. All along he was preparing for a military war when his adversaries had already started a devastating economic war.

With oil prices at record lows, the rouble is down 59%. The economic crisis has already claimed its first casualty in collapse of trust bank and Saudi Arabia insists they won't cut oil production. Coupled with sanctions that have occasioned massive capital outflow, the question now is when not if banks are going to have a run on deposits.

I hear they are preparing legislation that would force foreign companies to surrender their forex reserves to the state. China is offering to expand their currency swap deal. But everyone admits that Russia's over-reliance on oil exports and the sanctions have exposed the systemic weakness of its economy.

No matter how you look at it, Putin can't wiggle out of this mess.

For the sake of the innocent malysian airline passengers killed by Putin's thugs, I hope he goes down in humiliation.
