The 1980 Summer Olympics boycott of the Moscow Olympics was a part of a package of actions initiated by the United States to protest against the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan.

The West then created a whole new industry, now called TERRORISM, by funding the Mujahideen (meaning "people who do jihad" - "jihad" meaning holy war for Islam).

Looking back at the condemnation of Russia in Afghanistan, and instead supporting beginning of Islamic terror, we can see that the West was then clearly led by idiots.

It is clear that Clegg wants to be sure that he is included in the modern group (21st century) of idiot Western leaders - joining those who funded what became ISIS in Syria.

Why did our Western leaders fund ISIS? For the same reason they funded the Mujahideen. And for the same reason that 150 years ago they [Britian & the Western Powers] went to war with Russia over Crimea.

And for the same reason the now want to go to war over Crimea (Ukraine) - to LIMIT RUSSIA'S POWER.

Looking back on the history, you have to ask - were the consequences worth it?

What purpose would that serve?

Here's the problem: MSM including Guardian are refusing, quite literally, to place anything to do with Russia within the context of Nato expansion - because if they did, that would then raise questions about what the hell the West is up to.

Ukraine is turning into a very serious, hot war. It's the fault line in the battle between the US/UK alliance and Russia for Europe. Angela Merkel and Germany are deeply dependent on Russia. And Russia, for all its problems, still holds far more influence that US/UK on Eurasia, China, and the emerging nations.

This is a battle for Angela's allegiance.

So ignore all this tripe about a declining Europe. Do you seriously think Syria would have blown up in such spectacular fashion had European gas supply not hung in the balance?

The West aka US/UK are pushing a declining Western influence right up in the Caucasus. What's Nato without a war to fight now that Afghanistan's going its own way? Nato needs a reason to exist, and the United States is fighting desperately to retain its global influence.

Gaza is just another Israeli horror show, and a disgraceful one at that, with the West sitting by, through their inaction enabling this horrific slaughter. Despite its horrors, Ukraine is the more significant struggle. Why did Yats resign? What explanation has been forthcoming for that?

Perhaps some factual evidence regarding MH17 instead of all the spin??

Guardian has done stellar work on Snowden and other areas, but its work on Ukraine, Nato, declining US influence, and future of Europe is politicized and weak. Guardian readers are misinformed. They do not have the whole story.

And so talk about the World Cup in Russia is really very annoying. Westerners have a right to know and understand the full picture, especially right now with these tectonic plates shifting and the atmosphere so very uneasy.

Our futures depend upon it. We are in a very unstable period, and the depth and explanation for that instability has been very poorly presented, if at all, let alone adequately explained. And you call this the fourth estate.

I wonder if Clegg recalls the USS Vincennes incident?? That was not a rumour of the USA, as with Russia, it was their latest Aegis cruiser that shot down an Iranian airliner. An incident for which the 'brave crew' received medals and there never has been an apology

Clegg should take a look at the actions of america and his own country in the laying waste of Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Ukraine before he gets on his absurdly high horse from which he can only fall flat on his face.
