Quote:
No one expected the Spanish to show up in Brazil looking so tired and slow. Compared with the Chileans, they looked as if they were in slow motion. But when you think about it, was it simply because they didn’t have any great soccer left in them?

Seven of Spain’s 23 players competed in the all-Spanish Champions League final a few weeks ago. Ten played in the semis. In the longer view, the team has been playing and playing since winning the 2008 European championship, and several of this World Cup team’s key players — including Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Andrés Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi Hernández — were on that squad.

Xavi, the key figure in their midfield is 34; Casillas is 33; Xabi Alonso is 32. After so many miles on their legs and so much pressure to stay on top, their bodies might have had enough of it. No one ever said it’s easy to be the best. Besides, a younger generation is waiting.

Maybe Spain saw it coming; maybe it didn’t. But for every amazing athlete and every great team, there comes an end. Sometimes, it comes slowly, the way it did for Michael Jordan when he couldn’t dazzle us with his spectacular play as much as before. And sometimes, it comes fast, like one day waking up to a pair of creaky knees that refuse to do anyone’s bidding.

Only one thing is certain: Even the best can’t avoid the end.

The match between Netherlands and Chile should be a cracker to decide who tops the group and avoids Brazil? Question is, would you prefer to meet Brazil or Mexico at this stage? Unfortunately Brazil may field referinho but based on yesterday's game I think Chile can beat Brazil.

Cameroon a disgrace to African football and as @Alma has reckoned, they should be banned for that display. Croati vs Mexico will also be a thriller.

I'm still debating which was harder to execute between the first goal by RvP against Spain and that sumptuous volley by Cahill which was reminiscent of a similar volley by RvP against Norwich...truly excellence of execution!

As for Spain...

Now to the small matter of England vs Uruguay. With a not fully fit Suarez and their captain out through injury, I have a feeling England will nick it. That said, it will be poetic justice for Suarez single handedly preventing an African team reaching the semis, pun intended....Gyan's penalty miss notwithstanding.

Colombia vs Ivory Coast should be thriller as well...

When it comes to organization, Germans are quite good, mind you soccer is about team work, organization and preparation. Compare them to Indomitable Lions. Left for WC a few days to the day, were still arguing about entitlements and whether to go with their wives!

That is where they lost focus. They were already beaten even before the kicked the ball. You should expect to hear the same from Nigeria especially if they wriggle themselves to the next round.

England should have chosen accommodation that is very near to the Airport. smile

Alex Song is a disgrace.

Assou Ekotto is a bum. I have never rated him anyway. I wish he played for France instead of choosing Cameroon. I cant believe this guy has played in the EPL. At the last world cup when Denmark beat Cameroun, he was at fault for both goals. Then today he headbutts a team-mate. What a clown.

The rest of Cameroon are a disgrace too, running like headless chickens. Everbody for himself. Zero teamwork. Shooting the ball over the bar as if they were trying to launch geo-stationary satellites......

Africa is the worst performing Confederation so far.

Here is what I would summarize

Ghana: Excellent ball control good midfield but they simply cannot finish
Nigeria: Low calibre players, zero tactics
Cameroon : Everything is wrong with them
Algeria: They don't have any quality players even though many are French imports. But they really try
CIV: OK. They may be Africa's only hope.

Both of them must win today's match, any flop will see the looser going home early.A draw will still put them in a very tight corner.

@McReggae, why do u normally support the 3 lions?3
