is govt subsidizing the chinese because we were told that they will 'run' the railway ama running the railway has a different meaning here

By the way have you seen some of those major stations? They are YUGE and beautiful but I am surprise the CS Transie said we will only have one train per day one way each...
Who will use all those magnificie facilities? The night lights, the air-coned waiting lounges, the YUGE platforms etal?

This means the lounges will be used only for a maximum of say 1 hour and remain deserted for the next 23 hours.

Anyone of you ever visited the Syokimau commuter train station? Its in a state of disrepair due to underutilization plus utter NEGLET! Yet it get occupied at least 3 hours a day!

The type of the train stations built by these Chinese were fully based on the China model of mass transport...those stations require several trains per day, operation every 30 mins on the minimum.

Otherwise we will see some of the rare white elephants that we thought had become extinct!

good observation there, on the passenger side of things one can easily speculate with some measure of certainty that when the novelty of the SGR quiets down we shall begin to see those white elephants roaming around and this speculation is given more credence by the fact that govt has subsidized the commercial operations of the rail to the tune of 15b all this being to the detriment of the taxpayer, if we had a double track then one would reasonably speculate that those white elephants would be kept at bay.

Double tracks?? do you guys know how trains operates? talk of GOOD intersections and I will listen.

we may or may not know how trains operate but the question that begs an answer is that when fully operational the SGR is expected to have 43 locomotives operating on a single track line, how efficient will this be, prepare to spot a few white elephants

Railroad has never been a profitable business worldwide. India, with the largest and most complex railway network is a purely state affair. [/quote

The ripple effect on the economy is what matters. Even the toll roads in developed economies have some investment from the exchequer to be sustainable. The toll fee only maintains the roads but are not geared towards profit making.

Ati atia ? Have you looked at the feasibility study ? Done by the same contractor ? The president has been telling us its a game changer. That it will reduce transport costs by 60%. Now I have just seen the "discounted" prices for the cargo. 50K for a 20ft container.

We have a gentleman called @Mkimwa on this forum. He is a veteran trucker. He can do a 20 ft container @50K to your doorstep upto Thika. For SGR, please add another 30K for the last mile trip to your doorstep.

Again I ask, is the game-changing aspect of the SGR in addressing capacity challenges or in competitive pricing ? On these two it falls short.

Yet I still choose to support the SGR. As veteran newspaper commentator on public policy issues, I have been at it long enough to appreciate that an investment in infrastructure that may appear to have low returns in the short-term, tends to have incredibly high returns in the long-term.

Several years ago, we shouted ourselves hoarse about Turkwel Dam.

Today, it is an integral part of our hydro-electric power generation capacity.

We criticised Eldoret Airport as unviable and dismissed it as an investment funded by expensive and corruptly committed commercial loans.

SUPPORTING SGR

Today, it is one the fastest growing cargo hums of the region.

If I had the powers and means, I would force the two leading presidential candidates, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta and Mr Raila Odinga, to declare that they will continue supporting SGR until it reaches Malaba through Kisumu, even after the elections.

@FRM2011,

Trucking yes you can make cash ( as you are using infrastructure you have not built- the roads and only pay a levy to use which is minimal).

The game-changer is not in the economic sense but in terms to time saved and the national pride ( the feeling you get when you spot a KQ plane in far flung countries, but at home it makes astronomical losses). It would feel good to catch the train and be in Msa in 4hrs but the price is a subsidized one.

Will this Train havepolicemen in all the coaches? I am scared that Terrotists ccould take advantage of the usual slow response of the kenyan police, to slaughter passengers, once the train leaves either Nrb or Mombasa
