I am sure Kuki Gallman would feel more comfortable if the Pokots and Samburu just stayed in one place and allowed their cattle and themselves to starve to death so that she can go and feel philanthropic helping them with food. She says that she has all the papers to show that she owns her ranch which is 98,000 acres!!!! (ninety eight thousand acres!!!!) The Samburus and Pokots have lived in those areas for hundreds of years, their title is in their blood.

I agree with that Pokot warrior. For way too long both the colonialists and subsequent Kenyan governments have had nothing but madharau for the Pokot and other pastoralist communities. They have made it OK to trick them and steal their land. I do not think the leaders being accused of incitement have done anything more than just open their eyes to their current condition.

98,000 acres fenced off so that a few white people can live like this:

While your cows (your only way of life) are dying.

Then they use imported sunscreen and mosquito repellent jelly

Christine Mungai vs Kuki Gallman
She's gone ballistic after an article reported in the Guardian - Who Shot Kuki Gallman?

โ€Verified account @chris_mungai
You know, I was going to leave it alone. I really was. But this story has got me shook.
This story is so steeped in neocolonial tropes it's almost astounding that @guardian's editors didn't catch it

1. The lack of historicity. "White settlers came to [Laikipia] to farm wheat and raise cattle during the first half of the 20th century"
The underlying premise is that this land was terra nullis. An empty, unclaimed vastness waiting for someone to put it to good use
No, @t_mcconnell. Laikipia had owners, pushed out by the gun. Firepower and coercion made it the emptiness beloved by white settlers

"The land is home to elephants and rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes, wild dogs, bat-eared foxes and lions." See? Again, no people.
The white savior. Again and always.
Kuki Gallmann, "committed to protecting the environment and its wildlife" is up against "impoverished local men". Look at that. The natives!
3. (I forgot to continue numbering)...the erasure of Kenyan people and voices. Kuki Gallmann is quoted nearly 20 times. One Kenyan quoted.

(At first I was angry that these kind of massive editorial holes still have to be pointed out in 2017. But now I am just bored)
(Is bored the right word? I mean this: ๐Ÿ™„. Defending your humanity makes me feel like that. This conversation is uninspiring, even to me)
But let us carry on.
"โ€œSince many, many years my aim is to try to prove that people and environment can survive together, you have to have a balance,โ€ Kuki says.
What a revelation. If it wasn't for "the conservationists", we would never have known that. Right, guys?
4. When she talks about how she came to own an 88,000 acre ranch in Laikipia: "I totally and utterly fell in love with Ol Ari Nyiro..."
" ...and I felt โ€“ and itโ€™s irrational and difficult to explain -- that I had come home and there was a reason for me to be there." ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„
She had come home. HOME. And there was a reason. A REASON.

Isn't it interesting how there are wonderful empty places in this beautiful Kenya waiting for someone to fall in love with them?
That you can land in far-off country with a pile of luggage shipped in from Venice, and your love gets you an 88,000 acre ranch?
But anyway fam, there's a reason for this.

5. Some ranches have closed and some owners are considering selling, but others, among them Gallmann, are hunkering down, the article says.
"They are going to get tired of it. I know I will outlast them. There is no doubt in my mind," says Gallmann.
"They" is the impoverished local Pokot militia encroaching on "the environment". They will get tired. Kuki Gallmann will outlast them.
Of course they will get tired, Ms Gallmann. They are poor, impoverished and local, after all. They children will hunger and thirst.
*Their* children, I mean. They will turn against each other. They will run out of ammunition. Politics will change. They will scatter.

In a way, you are right. They *will* get tired.
And there you are, waiting for "them" to scatter, to hunger, to thirst, to turn against each other and just go away. To disappear.
Or at least to go back to being poor, local and impoverished, but quietly. QUIETLY.
I want to go on, but I can't. This feeling > ๐Ÿ™„, has been replaced by grief.
The grief of knowing that someone is waiting for our death, our quietness, our hunger and thirst and confusion.
The End.

This issue must be solved urgently. Otherwise after they invade the white ranches and finish the grass with the increasing cattle herds, they will move beyond the ranches to neighbouring farming communities to graze on the maize and bananas...and who knows they could end up in nairobi - like the maasai have moved their cattle herds into nairobi suburbs.

This reads like a horror story. Never knew that it was this bad. Surely this has nothing to do with "nyasi na ukame".

The Pokot remind me of the South Sudanese.

Nothing will come out of South Sudan, not until the current crop of human beings is extint. Jews should have occupied that land which is so endowed with resources (water, oil, pasture, rainfall) and hordes of savages.

The Pokot people are hurtling in the same direction. They don't sound like a people who can coexist with neighbours. As of now, there's a silent peace pact between them and the Samburu, hence the apparent collaboration in these invasions of white farms. Even though the sheer size of the farms is an indignity by itself, I do not think relapsing to the 16th century savage era will solve anything.

Today, Laikipia, Samburu, Baringo and parts of Elgeyo Marakwet are war zones. Happening just when they are being opened with asphalt roads and other infrstructure.......Very unfortunate.

I really hate this kind of reasoning that reduces human existence to the level of machines or domestic animals. Human worth cannot be reduced to production. What does it matter that nothing comes out of South Sudan? Does South Sudan and its people exist so that they can produce for other people to determine that they deserve to exist?

Pokots are human beings with every right to exist. In my opinion they are freedom fighters just like the Mau mau.

What freedom fighters? Would you term akamba invading Kiambu and killing the kiambuans freedom fighters? That is what pokot are doing in laikipia. They have migrated from Baringo to laikipia and are killing everyone from smallholder farmers to ranchers with abandon. They must be stopped.

And as @simonkabz has said they have been fighting everyone....marakwets to the west, turkana to the north, samburu to the east, ilchamus and tugens to the south, and now kikuyus and white farmers in laikipia to the south east. They have moved from B aringo and are now in rumuruti. Soon they might attack ndaragwa, kieni and nyeri having moved 300km from their homeland.

They are fighting for their freedom to exist and live the way they have always lived. I think the Pokot, Samburu, Marakwet and Tugen have no problem with each other. They have always fought each other and they will eventually make peace and then fight again. It is the white people and other non pastoralist Kenyans who moved into pastoralist lands that are crying. They have determined that a pastoralist way of life is not worthy of existence and look down upon it. A Pokot who determines that his way of life is worth fighting is a freedom fighter. We created a country that only legitimizes the white settlers way of life. There are people who live differently and they too are people.

If there is anyone who should be fighting it is the maasai whose fore fathers signed that land agreement with mzungu. But you cant have samburus and pokots invading from the neighbouring districts in the north and west respectively and killing maasai group ranch owners, whites and okuyo farmers. Pokots should remain in their territory in baringo and west pokot, and samburus in samburu district. If we cannot allow luhyas or nandi to invade kisumu county, then we must not allow pokots and samburu to invade laikipia.

This is the reason why as a society we created social contracts to form a thing called Government (politics 101).This Thing is supposed to ensure all diverse communities co-exist in harmony. It should have a monopoly of violence in order to contain warring communities such as the Pokot. Otherwise we will all be in the state of nature where everyone would have a right to everything leading to intense conflict and life of man would be , solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short (Thomas Hobbes, the leviathan).

Leaders and elders from Pokot, Samburu and these gun-toting communities should look at what happened with Mungiki, Sabaot Land Defence and Mombasa Republican Council when their attacks reached terror levels and advice their irrational young men to completely drop the way of the gun or to stick to small time robberies of a few goats and while at it keep that very far up north ...cause if they keep this up, it will reach critical mass, and then history will repeat itself.
