Its extremely profitable with low start up capital as long as you are in a strategic position.

I used to run one in dagoretti corner but decided to sell it off since i didnt have a honest person to run it.He used to buy and sell his own stock at my expenses yet am the one who was paying rent, He could inflate the buying price or just buy bad meat.
My monthly running expenses were as below
1.Rent:8K
2.Salary:15K
3.Bad stock and shortages:15K

I never had a freezer to store meat since i didn't see the need for it;I used to buy stock thrice per week.

The buying price per kg ranged between 230-250 depending on the days and selling price was 360.

I used to make an average sales of 30Kgs per day with monthly net profit of 50k-60K




Thats a decent figure per month. You've mentioned low start up capital; approx how much would one need in terms of finances?


I started with 60K, on the first day i only bought 10kgs then kept on increasing until i reached the optimal stock for which was 70Kgs sold over a period of 2 days

A friend of mine started a butchery business in Kangemi.

This is what happened to my friend.

His meat would go bad like daily due to power outages despite having a fridge.

Then his workers workers would feed the same to estate dogs.

Over time like 2 weeks most dogs in the estate knew where to gather for a meal.

My friend got so incensed and closed the butchery.It was in Dohnholm.Todate if he comes across a stray dog even as far as Wangigi he is tempted to hot it with a stone thinking its heading to his butchery.



@Bigchick, I operated a butchery without a fridge/freezer.If you buy fresh meat it should last for at least 3 days without any form of storage before it goes bad.

Most likely the guys were buying meat which was 1 or 2 days old at a cheap price.

Pia kuna ile nyama mbaya inakaa minced meat which goes bad instantly, again this meat is sold cheaply(niliambia ni zile ngombe hukanyangwa na ngombe zingine during transportation.Nyama yake its too red)

What of commercialized cleaning? where you do laundry for people using machines since people no longer trust house girls? any one thought of it? need critics......

Location is key for such types of businesses.

You may even target institutions. I've seen some gov't hospitals privatize both cleaning as well as laundry services.

All the ideas above are brilliant but having started a business before and sort of failing I learnt one thing.Don't put down any money before you do your research.

For example the gym idea sounds great on the surface but what if you invest that much and people just don't come to you.Instead, find at least twenty people in Roysambu,ask them if they work out or if they are interested in working out.And how much they would spend per month on working out.

Same as the butchery idea.Find out how much the people in the area make on average from their salaries.Do surveys around the area and try to find out how many times a week on average people in this area can afford to eat meat.

It's not about a great idea actually,it's about if your target market can pay for whatever your business offers.And pay for it regularly for you to make a profit and grow.

Ideas are worthless. Actually its the easy / lazy part and any person can come up with one. The real gain in in execution. To start a business, you do not need to "think" of ideas, just look at businesses in your area - do them better. An improvement of 10% is all people need in most cases. smile
