@ Ansal,

The main problem is the big man syndrom. They have to make sure that the Fatcats are not held up by the traffic lights. That is why they interrupt traffic on Uhuru Highway next to Continental house. They then shut down the entire city.... Notice how even the GK drivers drive on the wrong side and the cops just look on.

Mukiha , without a roundabout , especially on highways entering or passing the city centre, there wont be need to stop hence a bottleneck is removed.suppose there was an overpass at Nyayo stadium , Haileselasie avenue ,University way? There wouldnt be need to stop hence free flow of traffic

Then it will now be called the "Camel-Back highway"! The distances between those junctions are 600m to 800m. Imagine creating a 5m overpass every 750m... it will be like driving a toy car on a camel's back...and the cost will be in the billions of shillings

On one of the projects, we were never able to 'fine-tune" the timing of the lights because the cops insisted on controlling the traffic... we gave up after three weeks of writing letters to the traffic commandant and getting no help.

If all people [including cops] obeyed the traffic rules, there would be no jams.

Can it be done seeing how Kenyans [and especially Nairobians] have a high propensity for breaking laws?

YES!

See what happened when a few drivers were arrested live on TV for ignoring Zebra-crossings. Do the same for traffic lights and roundabouts and the problem will be solved.... or at least will shall know for sure if the roundabouts are to blame.

BTW: I still remember the days when one would get a ticket for "Attempting to jump a red light" if you stopped with the front wheels on the broad white line running across the road...

@Mukiha.

I completely disagree with you.

Your solution may work elsewhere but the section from Westlands roundabout to Nyayo stadium will only work with overpasses especially during peak hours. It won't matter how well the traffic lights are fine tuned in those sections.

Take an example. It's between 7.am and 7.30 am on Waiyaki way heading towards town. Vehicles are at an average of 70km/hr only limited by the distance between them. And this is the same to Kangemi and beyond.

Just stop the fist vehicle for 30 seconds (I am sure you know on average it takes more than 30 seconds for the lights to turn green.

The 100th vehicle will stop for more than a minute. This is now the cycle that causes heavy traffic jams.

You have said that if the underpasses and overpasses are too close, then It will be a camel back....Provided it is motor-able and safe, who cares what it is called. Leave this to engineers, we have seen them do this all over the world. Back here at home, don't you notice they are doing an overpass at museum hill roundabout and Ojijo road junction? what is the distance. What about GSU and former Nakumatt on Thika Road?

I know at times traffic cops do cause more harm on roundabouts but I would rather they are there.

Take a case of westlands roundabout in the evening. There is very slow movement of traffic from the roundabout to road that goes to sarit center. The traffic is green and vehicle enter the roundabout. Some start to exit and there is no movement. Now this blocks two other roads and a few minutes latter the third one is blocked. Or are you able to fine tune traffic lights to see that there is a problem on one exit and adjust accordingly.

Hate them or love them, they have been on the job, they have an idea of some of the limitations of traffic lights from real experience

That's the biggest mistake ever. Time will tell. Ever seen the chaos at riverside/kileleshwa junction? Why transfer that madness to Uhuru highway?

Traffic lights should work as they should then there should be no problem. Roundabouts are an idea who's time elapsed. Its time to move on
