China to Allow Direct Conversion Between Yuan and Swiss Franc

Quote:
China took another step to boost the yuan’s global usage, saying it will start direct trading with the Swiss franc, as the nation pushes its case for reserve-currency status at the International Monetary Fund.

The mess being fanned by ECB's monetary policy.

The Paris attack makes an already bad situation worse specifically with regard to the refugees' plight.

Africa urged to counter global shocks by using own DFIs

Quote:
The Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Dr. Patrick Njoroge, has said that Africa can minimise how much it is affected by global shocks by taking advantage of the services and programmes available from strong African multilateral development finance institutions like the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). According to a statement by Afreximbank on Monday, Dr. Njoroge told the final session of the 15th Afreximbank Structured Trade Finance Seminar in Nairobi that the continent’s over-dependence on external financing sources made it vulnerable to such shocks.

The euro thrived when the border were removed. Now the borders are being closed. Free trade movement kaput. Capital flight to continue piling in the USD. ECB QE will also shred the euro strength. The euro will likely get weaker than 80cts to the USD.

Indeed. At some point this Eurozone arrangement is going to be a serious handicap to all its proponents. Right now only the weaklings are feeling the brunt.

A broken system in the developed market economies and a hapless market trying to find its way around the madness.
Things are upside down. The bond market may be looking forward to a credit event on the sovereign front.
The main event may not be that far out after all.

Alibaba's Jack Ma Calls For E-WTO, Third World War Against Poverty

Quote:
"Trade is a freedom, trade is a human right," Ma said at the APEC CEO Summit in Manila. "We think we should build up a new E-WTO or WTO 2.0. The past 20 years WTO helped big companies. The next 20 years we should use E-WTO to support the small guys. The small guys are the most innovative companies."

Ma said that Alibaba, China's biggest e-commerce company, is what enables handicrafts makers in Africa to sell to customers in China. He said it is the third big technological change in about 100 years, following factories and companies, and could do more than enable trade.

"We should have a Third World War against poverty, climate change and disease."

"The WTO was an agreement between governments," he said. "I think a real trade treaty should be an agreement of business. Business agrees, government follows. If the governments agree [first], because of political reasons, because the governments hate each other, all the business goes nowhere. That's why we've been waiting for Doha Round for so many [years]. When I was a boy I heard about WTO. Now I'm still waiting for the results." Cc. Amb. Dr. A. Mohamed

How to lose half a trillion euros

Quote:
ON JUNE 16th something very peculiar happened in Germany’s electricity market. The wholesale price of electricity fell to minus €100 per megawatt hour (MWh). That is, generating companies were having to pay the managers of the grid to take their electricity.

The decline of Europe’s utilities has certainly been startling. At their peak in 2008, the top 20 energy utilities were worth roughly €1 trillion ($1.3 trillion). Now they are worth less than half that (see chart 1). Since September 2008, utilities have been the worst-performing sector in the Morgan Stanley index of global share prices. In 2008 the top ten European utilities all had credit ratings of A or better. Now only five do.

The rot has gone furthest in Germany, where electricity from renewable sources has grown fastest. The country’s biggest utility, E.ON, has seen its share price fall by three-quarters from the peak and its income from conventional power generation (fossil fuels and nuclear) fall by more than a third since 2010. At the second-largest utility, RWE, recurrent net income has also fallen by a third since 2010. As the company’s chief financial officer laments, “Conventional power generation, quite frankly, as a business unit, is fighting for its economic survival.”

This trend is going global... Take note.

Sideshow. Keep an eye on the dollar pegs instead (USD/yuan and USD/riyal). This is where the real war will be fought. Commodities are yet to crash!!

Fed rate hike will cause a lot of pain to any USD peg. Those pegs will all break down. Liquidity will evaporate fast. Markets will go bidless!

A black swan environment is already ripe! What will be the black swan(s)?

I am a skeptic so I still don't buy into this hiking vibe. Why would the fed want to be the obvious fall guys for a drastic economic downturn aka depression?

That said, I would really like them to hike the damn thing...the financial chaos that would spring out of it would be awesome. It will be a case of 'everyone for himself and God for us all'.

And it's about time things got interesting anyway.

http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/State-spends-10pc-of-projects-allocation-as-cash-crunch-bites/-/539546/2977236/-/okt0vrz/-/index.html

"A Treasury statement released Friday shows that Sh39 billion had been spent on projects in four months to October against an annual budget of Sh389 billion.

The government has experienced a cash crunch this financial year due to high debt payments, reluctance to borrow due to high interest rates, and below target revenue collection"

where will they get 350b from! i thought that was sorted by euro bond, even if they will borrow locally its impossible to raise that kind of money, or it simply means the projects will stall
