'We know that City are going to spend a fortune, pay stupid money, pay silly salaries and all that. We know that happens. We can't do anything about that.We concentrate on what we can do to try to bring players in for the right reasons. We invest in young players. That is what we are good at - we're not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods.' SIR ALEX FERGUSON
There's a level of hypocrisy from SAF's statement above, before City and Chelsea came in Man Utd were spending "crazy" money on any player they could get their hands on. Berbatov 30m, Rooney 27m, Rio 27m, Veron 28m, Ruud Van 19m, Carrick 18m, Hagreaves 17m, Anderson 15m etc Whatever City are doing now is exactly what Man Utd did to Arsenal and Liverpool.....Wenger couldn't get any good player at a reasonable price. I think SAF has realized that Man Utd are no longer on top of the "food chain" in terms of attracting top players, here i thought Wenger was the sore loser!
Ofcourse SAF is a sore loser, wouldn't you be if your once poor and miserable neighbour won the lottery and started buying things you couldn't afford after you had told the neighbourhood that he'd never get to your standards???? SAF is human guys,c'mon.
I have highlighted the area in red because City have spent in 4 seasons what Utd spent in 25 years

Of course this is a United blog but I don't think the writer has cooked the figures, please confirm.
Man Utd used to make a big signing every other year to remain competitive like any reasonable business man would do - Utd never spent 100M pounds in a season so that comparison is not right @Taz, we never distorted the market. Only Rooney and Rio make those crazy amounts of money, people like Giggs were just put on 75k just the other day, I won't even talk about other players. Chelsea were the first team to distort the market after Roman came in and this translated in wages as well - City have taken it to a new level.
When I talk about wages, I talk about people like Wayne Bridge making 120k and guys like Adebayor 170k, that's why they're even unaffordable to the clubs they're loaned to. City made over 100M pounds loss last year, Utd still has the highest profits before you factor in interest payments for the Glazer debt.
So that's what Fergie is referring to as crazy,@Taz. Don't compare oranges with Apples. City can only be compared to Chelsea and Real Madrid. That is what is crazy. And Fergie is right in saying you can't compete with that, all you do is try to build a strong squad with a few big name signings. Hopefully Kagawa will be one of those during the summer for us. Roman and Jose came and won 2 years in a row, seemingly invincible, then United regrouped and won 3 in a row. It'll be harder with City's vast resources but we'll still compete, maybe in a couple of seasons.
