Just a thought..previously thot on a different thread..
I have kshs500 in my wallet (i wish i'd have more), plus my ATM card. I'm young..hoping to grow my wealth over time..having an ATM says i have savings that grow over time. If i go and withdraw kshs 200 from the bank, i will have kshs700 in my wallet... Does that make me wealthier?.. Actually i'v diluted my networth by making shs200 of my savings highly liquid..i can spend it now!..plus it's friday.

NBK's bonus issue..does that increase my wealth as an investor?..NOT really Shame on you Shame on you ...they are converting shareholder funds...equivalent to my savings in my bank account, into easily disposable units.. if am a long term investor..they aren't preserving my wealth..just playing my greed. Brick wall

@proverB, Suppose u were given dividends instead of bonus shares? Which one preserves ur wealth more?
The opposite of courage is not cowardice, it's conformity.

I'd take bonus shares over dividends any day... For one they are not taxed, secondly the company uses the retained earnings to grow the biz, thirdly all the growth in the biz with use of retained earnings will lead to growth in the share price hence i will probably sell the bonus shares at a much higher price....

I choose bonus over dividends any day. One Reason is they are not taxed. And secondly the retained earnings are used to grow the biz

Actually @guru if you are given a choice of either shares or dividend, it is called a scrip dividend (like the one Standard Group is doing). A scrip dividend is taxed in the usual manner, then the funds are applied to buy shares at a rate determined by directors.
If however the company offers a bonus only, the company will have to pay the taxman something to compensate him for the loss of the withholding tax he would have otherwise earned (this can be waived by the Commish depending on the reasons provided).
