@ McReggae,I agree except that I do not see much of the emotions, that has certainly come down. Opinions on any subject are what the discussion forum is about and it should not be a problem that someone holds opinion a certain way, except that it should be supported when challenged, which I think Fundaah is trying to run away from. Ati was just quoting Mars Group, hawesimek!

good people lets look at the bigger picture- did Uhuru achieve the ultimate objective i.e cut down the running costs of limos? Lets have facts and facts only about the comparative costs of maintenance between a passart and a merc. We should not forget that other finance ministers have tried but failed to have the mps relenguish their guzzlers!

Of course there is corruption. Why did the Government not buy the Passats straight from Germany? There must surely be someone in this government who knows that that is where they are made and it is simple logic that when you go straight to the source you can get a better deal than from a second or third trader.

But don't blame it on Uhuru. Blame it on whoever formulated the procurement policy that states that goods must be sourced from the 'local supplier.' For all the years that the Government has been buying Mercedes Benzes from DT Dobie how many people raised a finger. I will even go ahead and argue that this is a move in the right direction because for the first time we know the price that the government is paying for the vehicles. Can anyone please quote for us the amounts spent on all the Mercedes from DT Dobie that have been bought since independence. Any idea how much the police Landcruisers from Toyota Kenya cost or the Mercedes Army trucks from DT Dobie or the Police Nissan X Trails from DT Dobie. What about the Police Yamaha motorcycles from Toyota Kenya or before them the BMW ones from Mashariki. All the flying squad Peugeut 504s came from Marshalls, right? What was the price? Put all the figures here so that we can discuss this mega corruption without singling out CMC and the Passats.

Uhuru stated two objectives for the change, but we have all been focusing (selectively) on one. The objectives were:

Reduce government's transport costs
Change the image from extravagance to medesty.

His arguments was that Benz and the big 4WDs are seen as vehicles for the rich and affluent. We saw Kajwang,Shitanda,Mudavadi,Wekesa,. etc insisting that the Passats are for small boys and gals....This is exactly the mentality that Uhuru wanted to change.

Saving on fuel will obviously be achieved when the current guzlers are replaced with the 1800cc Passats.

Someone may ask: why didnt he buy the smaller 1800cc Benz....The answer is because if reason-1 above.

Why not toyotas....This are the vehicles that every dick and hurry is driving around town. At least spare the VW comes in between the toyotas and the benz...

Uhuru says the reason he didn't go for the smaller 1800cc Benz is they get charged more duty at port than the passats and would therefore not be a reduction of cost. Kweli ama rongo,I don't know. The machinations that go down at the port are a mystery to me.

...so that is your line of thought....so we should lie low and watch the waste because it has been happening in the past ....raise no finger???

@Kusadikika; Why did the Government not buy the Passats straight from Germany?

Two reasons:

Simply because it would have been more expensive!! Can you imagine bringing in German Mechanics every three month to service the cars?
Franchise agreements between manufacturers and dealers do not allow the manufacturer to sell directly in the dealer's territory. dealers get exclusive distribution rights and the manufacturer can't even appoint another dealer while the franchise agreement is in force. You might remember that when Mitumba cars started coming into Kenya,Toyota Kenya Ltd refused to support them with parts....they would not even sell you the spare part if they found out that you are going to fix it in a mutumba!!
