I am not sure how all these smoke and mirrors with statistics help. Also it may trigger additional borrowing which is no good.

With all this rebasing , GDP will soon lose relevance. Uganda and Tanzania may soon rebase their GDP and claim to have passed Kenya.

In any case the most important stats are those that measure how Kenyans actually live:

1. Unemployment rate
2. Youth unemployment rate
3. Crime rate
4. Percentage under poverty
5. Purchasing power parity
6. Inflation
7. Exports value
8. Balance of payments
9. Percentage of population with piped water
10. Percentage with electricity

Tugange hayo. If Kenyans focus on these especially at election time, the country will be much better.

There's nothing wrong in knowing your networth even as an individual. If UG and TZ carryout their analysis and find that they are wealthier than KE. Good for them and no big deal. Life goes on

Who said it was a big deal?
My larger point is that GDP is becoming irrelevant. As Ms Waiguru said "It does not mean Kenya is now richer". Its better to look at other measures to see where Kenya really is. GDP all depends on base year and how creative a country's technocrats are. But Unfortunately now they are even forging unemployment rates.

Typical Sidika complex. Make everything look "good" on the outside, while the inside rots.

There is at least one 'computer error' in the re-based figures. Not sure they are aware they used 68 billion instead of ~161 billion for the ICT sector when computing the totals. Could mean $1B is missing from 2013 GDP total. What other errors are there?
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

Someone has to pay for the lifestyle...

This rebasing thing stinks just like the inflation methodology change back in 2010.

Debt binge coming up! Let's see how $KES will stay below 95/-

Comparing GDP with debt is very absurd. The only thing that should be compared to debt is the taxes coz that what really pays for the debt. This is just an excuse to rack up debt to unsustainable levels. Lots of countries do this so may be its not crazy after all smile

Funny arguments from people I thought were experts in economic matters. Rebasing of the GDP (recalculation) can be compared to the Population census (recount). Now, can any of the naysayers tell us what is wrong with a population census??? What does Kenya lose by rebasing(supervised by Bretton Woods institutions)???

At least we know our strength, and where we should be-I bet the we are lagging behind infrastructure-wise and we need to wake up.
