When Eric Mumo graduated from university with a First Class honours degree in 2009, he got several exciting job offers, but he declined them all.Applause Applause Applause

What a waste of brains. Very sad especially when it is our taxes that were used to subsidize his education at uni. Where would the US be technologically if all the top Ivy league brains turned down offers to work at NASA and Silicon Valley and instead opted to rear cows and chicken in the midwest?

Maybe what we need to do about the perpetual strikes about salary increments, is to send home the striking workers... thus converting them from employees to employers. Force people to start thinking.

And give the opportunities to young fresh graduates (those who'd have it), for initial work experience and a chance to accumulate capital... and then kick them out too

interesting view!!smile

Its not a waste of brains, USA is where it is today because of some chaps who refused to be employed and instead decided to be innovators, entrepreneurs and employers.Do you know that there won't be any innovation if everybody was in formal employment?

Aren't those who work in R&D departments in companies such as Apple, Google, Boeing, Ford, HP, pharmaceutical companies etc, and who come up with innovations that make these companies leaders in their fields, in formal employment? Why do companies invest in R&D departments? And why do they go fishing for the best brains at university colleges? What if the brightest chaps turned them down and went to rear cows?

1.What would happen if Tom Preston-Werner, Co-Founder of GitHub didn't turn down a job offer from microsoft worth over $,300,000 p.a
2.What would happen if Dave Girouard didnt leave Google
3.What would have happended if Jeff Bezos had not left the hedge fund?
4.What would have happended if Eric mumo accepted the job offer?

What would have happened in the above four scenarios is that only 4 employment opportunities and livelihoods of four families would have been created but 1,000 job opportunities have been created and livelihoods of other 1,000 families enhanced because they were a "waste of brains" to leave the employment and become entrepreneurs/innovators.

What you forget is that Apple, Google, HP,ford and boeing exist because there was a "waste of brain" for someone who refused employment and decided to be an entrepreneur/innovator

maybe at microsoft they would have done better code to prevent a virus that caused millions of people loses, or maybe without amazon - there would exists many more brick and mortar stores that would create more jobs for the lower end segments. smile

Yes, it is true, most of the consultancy firms like KPMGs, Pricewaterhouse, equity etc do source for top performers from universities... I know some who have declined these jobs.... even the private sector... where i was working before, there was one guy who we tried poaching (in third year UON) and he declined and insisted he wanted to concentrate with his studies. It depends on the course you've taken and the performance

May be this, may be that. The only thing that is not may be is that Mumo took a path not soo well beaten and is making a highway out of it!
