Trying to repress the media is what becomes a repressive society

We all laugh at the mistakes the media makes. We all get annoyed when some media guy writes something stupid.

But don't be fooled.

Without information, we become a dictatorship. Maybe that's the jubilee motto.

But we can't have laws more repressive than Kenyatta and Moi era.

It is simple. Either Uhuru belives in freedom of expression or he doesn't.

He may be muthamaki in your eyes but allowing him to decide what shows up in the newspaper is soooooo 1980's. Not tichital at all.

Or maybe he wants us all to sing songs for him. And see him as the King of Africa or something.

Freedom of expression is why people voted for the constitution.

That is why Mandela's shoes will never be filled by njumbiree.

They are just thugs who want to stop us from saying something is wrong with their job. PERIOD.

I don't like the kenyan media. But there's no way I can support taking Kenya back to gov't controlled media. Why have dstv and internet? Let's all go back tO kbc.

The media bill is wrong. You can't sugar coat it or make it palatable. Uhuru is exhibiting his tiktata ship. I've been right all along.

Njumbiree is made after Moi's image.

Uhuru is not God. Now jail me.

This law is so stupid even Moi couldn't do it.

Lakini he's muthamaki or something. He'll give our shudren laptops. Wow!

He can tell the ICC he'll be on skype. Wow!

If this law passes, he'll go down on wikipedia as the worst tikteta on earth. Worse than Azabaijan. Probably the reason he copy pasted their website.

Bullshit law.

Honestly, I am not sure whether to support or not. Why? Because I am yet to know which areas are oppressive yet the media has been screaming they are draconian...

1. The media says that the fines are too high. Why fear the fines if what you report is truth..if you can support it with facts...if you are not "paid" by the "others" to spoil the "others" name in whichever way?

2. The composition of the dreaded committee...The law says it shud be independent of Commercial and govt interests. Why does the media want to handle it themselves yet they have direct interest commercially and otherwise? Further, the committee is made up of interested groups from all sectors, including KNUT. The govt representation is on the minority. How exactly is the govt gagging them? How would the minister gag them if his/her representation is on the minority?

3. Which other sections is the media against? I am also sure the media is an interested party in this and thus I dont expect them to tell us all the truth about what is happening. Is there an independent Wazuan with the facts who can enlighten me on these issues?

4. If in deed there are draconian sections, after how long can the law be amended in parliament? Is it 6 months? Maybe that would be enough time to have seen whether the laws really makes sense to the nation or not.

If I am enlightened on the above, I will be sure who is telling us the truth.

Just recently the UK Queen sealed a Royal Charter on press regulation which some thought would weaken the freedom of the press by allowing political interference but others also supported it claiming that the newspaper industry had failed to regulate itself effectively so far. The UK newspaper and magazine publishers also lost a High Court bid to block the progress of the government-backed royal charter on press regulation. So whats the difference between Kenya and the UK?

@Alma, i really hope you would spare sometime and look at what's happening elsewhere (West before kuongea mambo ya Africa.

Any law that wants or seems to want curtail my freedom of saying what I want is poisonous.

If Uhuru is so agrieved by a journalist, we have another law that says that he can sue.

Not telling people not to say what they wish to.

This media bill comes very soon after some other crazy guy in this gov't was talking about policing the internet and making every blogger a journalist.

Washiku. I know you love muthamaki. But denying media freedoms is not the way to do it. What happens if Raira (sic) becomes president tommorow?

What happens when you are told that talking badly about muthamaki on wazua is a crime.

I will never ever support anyone who wants to deny even a drunkard in the streets the freedom to say what he has in his heart.

That is colonialism mambo leo.
