I think what they may have observed is the apparent weight gain in HIV +ve patients who are on HAART, which is expected anyway as the viral load goes down and general immunity improves. So some might probably have extrapolated that to mean the drugs directly cause weight gain in the said patients and is now 'exploiting' the same ostensibly to 'fatten' chicken.
@Mukiri, I have come across a similar argument in the past. Thing is though, exposure to sub-therapeutic doses of such drugs cannot be ruled out, with the consequent development of resistance to such drugs.
At a place closer to me, there have been persistent claims of some commercial poultry farmers who inject their chicken with what I suspect to be some hormone in an apparent move to fatten and hasten their maturity. It however is quite secretive and I've so far not been able to identify the nature of whatever it is they inject their chicken with. Anything referred to as 'Grade' is a No-Go-Zone. Grade Chicken, Grade cows, sijui what-resistant crops etc. Some gene has to have been altered which consequently alters something in the person who consumes it. There is one thing I love about Salvation. It removes your mind from pollution the gutter, fun, illicit s*x, alcohol/drugs, the world etc and makes you focus on the important things. Things like your life, your health and those of your loved ones. Why do we have so many cancer cases? Why do we have funny funny diseases? Why do people worship doctors and relegate their responsibility for their own health? Like the other day, someone wanted to postpone nature so as to have some fun on holiday... future ramifications nayo? smh Are you saying you keep of anything "grade material"? Tell me how you would tell the difference unless you grow your own? Thats why you should try farming... One can start as small as aquaponics on your veranda it takes a lot to impress me....when i first saw a working aquaponics setup - i was impressed!! All Mushrooms are edible! Some Mushroom are only edible ONCE!
