Some time back I paid a visit to SOS Village in Mombasa and was enamoured by their Solar farm, about an 8th of an acre powering all their requirements including a water processing plant.
That's besides.... I have thought of installing a solar system back in my village however i have no clue exactly what would be the costs for lets 200Kw/h consumption!

Visit chloride exide on enterprise rd for a quote if in nairobi. They gave me one of 250k for a similar hse. With a kenya power bill of at least 5k per month, you are home and dry after 50months.

By the 50th Month you would have changed the battery packs at least once...and a few inverters would have chpapad/blown up.

ION: I think its things like iron boxes and hairdryers plust instant water heaters that cant be run effectively by a solar power; but fridge iko sawa since the wattage is low although it will be running the longest! (will consume more but in small quantities)
My cents!

btw, kwanini hakuna fridge za solar? was socked at the price solar Freezer at that shop next to Keswick....179k for a kawa chest freezer Think ThinkThink

Now with KPLC connecting people at 270K, aint solar energy the ULTIMATE option?

Got a quotation of 375k from kplc for my mums house, I then visited some solar guys and they installed a system worth 285K it powers a 26inch flat screen tv, dvd, decoder, radio, 5 lights, fridge, hot water, occasional blender, and its doing fine no down times even in rainy season, they used some deep cycle batteries and I can always add batteries and panels if needed.

Kenya is lucky to be near the equator so the number of hours under sun per day is high enough to sustain solar powered homes. KPLC will need to slowly move towards solar power installations in future to stay relevant. They can use their massive infrastructure to distribute solar power using their existing grid like it happens in Germany.
