About bicycles in other countries,...yes, there are cultures that are highly evolved (but also have very reliable public transit systems - making personal cars unnecessary). In yet other countries, car ownership comes with very high taxes (Hong Kong for instance). In the UK (London), they have congestion charges, which are high enough to discourage people driving into cities.
In conclusion, do not oversimplify - different places, different circumstances.

I preach and drink my water, 5 years bila ride now I walk or cycle to town, best decision I ever made. If I seriously need a car, taxi or car-hire. And if I'm ever forced to buy a car.. it will be those tiny 900cc ones.
