This is the day the Lord has made that we should rejoice and be exceedingly glad in it.
I grew up in Nairobi in the 90s where we lived in constant fear of the political class and the elite, we spoke about the President and the High and Mighty in whispers and dreaded a visit by the intelligence Service operatives. All around us were assasinations and scandals of mega proportions. Kenya was teetering on the brink of self destruction. There was no democratic space and we were cloistered in shackles of oppression. Then stalwarts of the second liberation stood up:the likes of Raila Odinga, Rev. Timothy Njoya, James Orengo, Kenneth Matiba, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Charles Rubia, Martin Shikuku, George Anyona..the list is endless. They shed tears and blood for our freedom from the neo-colonialists and land grabbers. We now have a new constitution, a new set of laws, a new revamped judiciary and for the past two years we had hope. All that can either be maintained or destroyed with a single stroke of the pen today. Such is the arduos and monumental task that faces Mutunga and Co.In the minds of many it may be seen that the Electoral body committed the biggest dis-service to the advancement of democracy and the public interest as envisaged by the Constitution. They spat on us, they would say...they looked us in the eye and said we will take your hard earned taxes and desecrate the electoral process another would say "I am not afraid to say it, they should all be sent to jail, I hope and pray that the Court will agree with me that the two Petitions should succeed" It was once said;"It doesn't matter how long we may have been stuck in a sense of our limitations. If we go into a darkened room and turn on the light, it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for a day, a week, or ten thousand years -- we turn on the light and it is illuminated. Once we control our capacity for transparency and human rights, the light has been turned on."We have been in this darkness of electoral manipulation and machinations for too long. Way too long. Mutunga, Tunoi, Ojwang, Ibrahim, Wanjala, Njoki...turn on the lights of accountability and transparency. Let the march of liberation from excesses and corruption continue, whatever way the descision goes let us remember we are all citizens of this beloved country, who have vowed to pledge our loyalty to the President and nation of Kenya...we also pledged to defend the flag of our mighty republic...we are all brothers and sister, let us be true patriots and practice true peace, true love and above all true unity...May GOD bless all of you,May GOD bless Kenya
