1952 – Governor Evelyn Baring declares a state of emergency in Kenya and begins arresting hundreds of suspected leaders of the Mau Mau Uprising, including Jomo Kenyatta, the future first President of Kenya.
Members of Mau Mau are currently recognised by the Kenyan Government as freedom/independence heroes/heroines who sacrificed their lives in order to free Kenyans from colonial rule.[217] Since 2010, Mashujaa Day (Heroes Day) has been marked annually on 20 October (the same day Baring signed the Emergency order).[218] According to the Kenyan Government, Mashujaa Day will be a time for Kenyans to remember and honour Mau Mau and other Kenyans who participated in the fight for African freedom and Kenya's independence.[217] Mashujaa Day will replace Kenyatta Day; the latter has until now also been held on 20 October.[219] In 2001, the Kenyan government announced that important Mau Mau sites were to be turned into national monuments.[220]

Mdudu,thanks for enlightening me.didn't know that.what of moi day?why is it celebrated and when was it first celebrated?how comes this year parastatals and banks were open?

Moi day was deleted from the activist katiba.
It was celebrated first in 1988 to mark TEN years of Nyayoism.
Where the date 10th of October was chosen only Toro can tell in his yet to produced memoa.

Impunity,may be he chose it because of kumikumi i.e 10/10 and the last celebrations were held on the real kumikumi i.e 10/10/2010
