You will note that the $19B is for hosting only. Other infrastructure like roads, the underground, hotels, airport, etc. were already in place.

So if Kenya was to host in 12 years time, then we need to have these in place over and above the 19B.

Why don't we focus on what we can achieve for the majority of Kenyan poor like elimination of poverty, slums, clean water for all and national healthcare. These are more pressing needs IMHO.

Big talk tuwache.

Olympics won't help us! He should have made a bold claim on something like "Clean Water For All" or "Healthcare For All" by 2024

3 times from where??.Beijing spent USD 3B and made a paltry USD 170M.....as for London, there are doubts as to whether they will make a penny

Clearly the authorities massively misjudged, but it was entirely because they refused to believe the evidence of past games. They were glory-blinded. Had the government said from the start that London was a rich city staging the Olympics as a costly but generous gesture to the world, there could be no further argument. Ministers said no such thing. From Cameron down, they claimed the games would make money, now and, if not now, then some time in the future. This was plain dishonest. Everyone knows there is no Olympic legacy, but, as with Santa Claus, we dare not tell the children.

London will not recover the cost of the Olympics and may as well forget it. Having spent the money we should at least lie back and enjoy it. But we should stop pretending. The real victims of London's mind-numbing mendacity will be the poor and hapless citizens of Rio in 2016. They really cannot afford it.

Is there any country in the recent past that has made money from hosting such games (Olympics, World Cups et al)?Methinks is more like to give your country/city more visibility and prestige. That is why countries like Russia and Qatar did everything to win the upcoming world cups in 2018 and 2022 respectively. They want to show the world how ahead they are currently. I doubt whether they will be thinking of how much they will get from the games. After all they are flush with oil/natural resources money. As for Brazil they want to show the world that they are the big boys in the BRICS. Haven't S. Africa and China successfully pulled of theirs? At times this becomes very costly as Greece learnt the hard way.The current financial troubles they are facing can be at least partly attributed to hosting of the Summer Olympics in 2004.

Anything Jakom says happens but only in certain quarters. Where they dont argue, they dont question. Even when it is spelt out for them in black and white. In 588 pages.
Jakom anapanda ngazi kutoka juu. Afanye mambo ya nguvu Kibera kwanza na atangaze visible results. Not always 'plans' and making announcements that he thinks will excite the diaspora na wazungu. But he has been covered in an international paper, that's good enough for his ego. I can bet my salary ya last month, this was just a euphoric bluff and he has forgotten all about it.

Geez the cost of hosting Olympics is even more than Githae's ambitious budget of 1.4T, Fiscal year 2012/2013.
