Good people of Wazua, i need to tap on your experiences and knowledge.

What activities do you give your children to help them learn to "earn" their money? More specifically 8-10 years of age?

First things first.

Open a Cub Account with KCB, (don't try the Jumbo Junior acc of Coop as they will charge you for every conceivable reason). The kids need to learn how to save first from the little they get on their birthdays, visiting uncle, grandpa etc. Then, show them how to draw a budget. From there, you have given them adequate reason to earn money by all means necessary.

If you have a farm, let them join other workers in covering planted seeds, carrying small loads of harvests, washing the jembes after work, washing the car, shining your and daddy's shoes etc. They will fall over themselves trying to do as much work to earn them more before schools open.

Being neat is also a value. Buy them nail cutters, and other items to keep them well groomed. Reward any effort in neatness, from body to children's rooms to compound and drive ways.

Those weeds need to be taken care off, collecting tree leaves after shearing etc etc.

Wendz, pass by my place we talk.

I have in some small way tried to internalise the virtues of hard work/smart into the children thro their own school work by rewarding them and seeing how they behave with the money they get.

The first is whenever the ten o'clock snacks have not been provided I give them some amounts between ten and fifty bob. They are supposed to save part of this money towards their own projects which are small as per their age(The first one is seven and second six). The second one has so far managed to save some Kshs. 150 while the first has Kshs. 80 from the first term as they have to start small. This is meant to inculcate a culture of sacrifice for saving as we cannot always be on self gratification.

The second part of earning is thro their performance on the exams at the mid and end term.This is how it works as much as they are in a tender age;

-Ten shillings for every 100% they get at very paper,
-Nine shillings for anything between 90-99%
-Nothing earned for less than 90% as the class level deems this as average. (in other words there are no rewards for mediocrity and they should strive to be the best they can be at this very stage).

Any suggested expenditure on unreasonable demands is usually suggested thro their savings which is usually rejected as they know its not that important, again reinforcing the idea of wise spending.
