Did anyone really envisage a military confrontation between USA and Russia under whatever circumstances, at least not until doomsday when we all are ready for the nuclear explosion. In a way therefore, it is impossible for Obama to take on Russia head on, just like Putin can watch NATO kill Gaddafi, oppose it, but do nothing!!!

As for the US, was John Kerry really the right person for the position of secretary of State? With all the conflict across the world, Obama is a war time president for all intents and purposes. He should therefore have picked a retired General as Secretary of State. John Kerry may be a good a war hero, but when your plate at the State Department includes huge files from Iran, Iraq, Israel, Russia, Korea North, Venezuela, Somalia...then you cease being just the top US diplomat, but also the top war monger and peace maker. You cannot have a pussyfooter President and a lily livered Secretary of State.

EU seem not able to do anything as Russia can sell energy to china but London needs the stolen Russian billions to keep The City spinning.

Let me veer off a little. The one thing this kind of international crisis shows is how nearly all international mainstream media is a tool of propaganda and geopolitics. For instance, CNN leans heavily on the US position, demonizes Putin's actions at every turn and avoids airing any news/views (even the obvious) that would show Putin/Russia in positive light. Russia Today (RT) does the same against US/NATO.

CNN and RT exchange barbs on editorial bias. And state ownership seems irrelevant here. As state-owned RT drives the Russian government's agenda, privately-owned CNN/New York Times/Wall Street Journal do the bidding for the US government. Al Jazeera leans West on this one but only slightly while CCTV seems disinterested. Obviously, neither channel feels it has a dog in this fight.

Of course, it is fantastic that the days where many on the planet relied solely on CNN and BBC for international news is over. Diversified sources of news and analysis will gradually make it ever harder to sell air-brushed viewpoints to the masses. If you do not believe me, here is what fmr Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had to say in March 2011

"We are in an information war and we are losing that war...Al Jazeera is winning. The Chinese have opened up a global English language and multi-language television network, the Russians have opened up an English language network. I've seen it in a couple of countries and it's quite instructive."

The days of truthful, objective and unbiased reporting died in the 1980s. Perhaps earlier. Today, global geopolitics determines the slant of all major news. Bottom line, if you want to uncover the truth in this convoluted world of ours where irony, double-speak, inconsistency, subversion and national interest rule, you have to take everything you watch or read from 'independent' and 'award-winning' sources with a pinch of salt.

Otherwise, you remain just another pawn in the disinformation chess game.
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

DITTO. One has to be very careful on what they take in. For @kiash's neighbors they know how partisan media can be. There are channels that are anti democrat (fox) and the other pro democrats (msnbc, cnn) anyway, for more objective news. Read both news from Russia (RT) and the rest then weigh your option. I prefer to read the brit papers because their independent media is always out to "break news" hence forcing the mainstream media to carry a story.

The Crimean parliament decides to join the Russian Federation, and to hold a referendum in 10 days' time.

Ukraine says the move is unconstitutional.
