Do cadets get assigned to direct combat really? @Impunity, Its good to read and understand a statement b4 commenting. That guy joined as a cadet, every Officer joins as a cadet but graduates thro the ranks upto General. And yes, cadets can be deployed in war/ direct combat, though there are conditions. They were not deployed in this case. Those guys being "interviewed" to join the army by running round the fieald do they join as cadets? For once I thought cadets graduate to be special officers mainly in the engineering and civil works...theirs is a support team and the brian behind the operations...not directly fighting; but I may be wrong!  A cadet once he graduates after 3 years of training starts out as a 2nd Lieutenant. This is called a GSO(General Service Officer). Specialist Officers are recruited according to their specialisation. Eg doctors,teachers,surveyors etc. These do not go through the 3 year training. Check out www.mod.go.ke for more info. Or divide to COs (Commissioned Officers) Lieutenants and above - (Rank is printed next to shirt color (Yoke), usually stars ) - The brains/speculators and philosophers/middo crass of army, can enter after high school with B+ or after University degree Other Ranks ( Warrant Officers and below, sergeants, e.t.c) Rank is displayed on the side of sleeve usually looks like V or nothing) - The warriors, they do most of the running and firing.
