@Kingfisher, you see the problem is that Russia will almost grind to a halt if they can't sell the same oil......does Putin and all the oligarchs want that route????

Thinking in one direction always is very bad @jahman.... ok lets assume the west calls their bluff and don't buy any Russian oil... so Russia stays with their oil and gas of course.... now tell us where the west will get the oil and gas from to supplement the deficit and at what cost??

This Ukranian thing will be conveniently forgotten by next week and we will be back to kawaida issues... palestine-israel-syria-israel problems.... incidences that do not affect european economies much....

Now ponder the quote below:

Quote:
The biggest mistake that so many commentators on all sides make is to say that Ukraine's splitting up into two will have disastrous implication for its neighbours and even regional stability. Well, maybe for the western part of Ukraine that would be the case. It is totally dependent on the industrial base in the east and will have to rely on financial support from the European Union, which, it has to be said, is not at all keen on parting with substantial amounts to help out the new people in charge in Kiev.

@King, what you have is the report of trade and no where does it indicate a deficit ie and inability of the other producers to produce more!!!!

@KingFisher, depending on which side the OPEC countries fall, they can easily adjust their production to meet the shortfall.

They can't adjust production to meet such a huge shortfall immeadiately. They will not even get anyone willing to invest in new capacity to meet this shortfall.

I see smart sanctions at play here, US will withhold trade on things like access to financial institutions that make trade much easier, this will slower down Russian trade by some fraction, the impact is huge financial losses for everyone concerned.

They may also withold access to critical equipment required in their oil industry. The effect will be felt in a years time and may take many years for Russia to reverse.

There is a reason why the West is dithering. Secretary Kerry sounds frustrated and angry (Obama is calmer). There are no MAJOR sanctions on Russia without painful consequences for the EU particularly Germany. What they are doing for now is playing to the gallery and trying to salvage national pride through token sanctions/actions.

Frankfurt's DAX fell 3.4% yesterday. It is more than $300B larger by market cap than Moscow's so drops have to be looked at in context. Bypassing Russia oil/gas will push up global oil/gas prices and Russia still gets cushioned indirectly despite massively reduced sales volumes. Among others, the second largest consumer of crude oil China will not participate in sanctions.
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

(Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia saw no need to use military force in the Crimea region of Ukraine for now, in remarks apparently intended to ease East-West tension over fears of war in the former Soviet republic.

The use of force by Russia in Ukraine would be a choice of last resort, Putin said, and sanctions being considered against Moscow by the West would be counter-productive.

Putin told a news conference at his state residence outside Moscow there had been an "unconstitutional coup" in Ukraine and ousted leader Viktor Yanukovich, an ally of Russia, was still the legitimate leader of the country despite giving up all power.

Earlier on Tuesday, Putin ordered troops involved in a military exercise in western Russia, close to the border with Ukraine, back to their bases.

The MICEX was up 5.19 percent at 16.00, Moscow time, with the RTS adding 5.93 percent. This marks a major turnaround from Monday, when the ruble-based MICEX dropped 10.79 percent on Monday, and the dollar-based RTS index fell 12.01 percent, the lowest level since September 2009. On the same day the ruble hit an all-time low against both the dollar and euro. Most analysts attributed the fall to the growing tension over Ukraine.

@king the figures you've analyzed has put things very clear on the likely direction, surely there's so much at stake for the West and US if they make stupid decision, which as you put it, may never happen Applause
