I met Mbogo in 2004. He was selling newspapers at Bellevue junction on Mombasa road. At the time, he had been contracted by a registered vendor to sell as a sub-agent.

A few months later, his boss was hit by a matatu and died. Mbogo was left without a job.

Luckily, Mbogo had saved sh30k and he went to Nation newspapers and paid a deposit to be registered as a vendor. BTW: you need to pay for one week supply of 100 papers daily; cost comes to about sh20k.

Within a month, he had raised enough to register at the Standard as well.

For the next 3 years, Mbogo worked hard and increased his area of operation to cover almost half of South B. He had six sub-distributors selling a total of almost 1,000 papers daily.

One morning in 2007 as I picked my paper from him, he noticed a Toyota Corolla 90 passing by and said "If you know some one selling such a car, tell me".

I asked him what he wanted to do with it and he said he wants to provide taxi services to the local people. Some of his newspaper customers had asked him to get the taxis on several occasions...

A month or so later, he told me that he had found one and bought it at sh200k. It was parked across the road from his mains newspaper stand.

He operated this vehicle for about a year and one fine morning I saw him driving a newly imported Toyota Fielder. He stopped and gave me a lift to town.

As we talked, he let it out that he had imported it from Singapore at a cost of sh850k. "What about the old car?" I asked him.

He said he had employed a driver to run it....

About a year ago, I moved out of the estate and didn't see Mbogo for several months.

Last Friday I visited a friend at my old estate and while there I saw Mbogo's Fielder taxis parked near the main gate.

I called him to say hi and catch up... he told me that he was at the airport picking up a customer in his taxi.

I retorted: "Come on, Mbogo I can see your car parked here in South B!"

"No; I am in my new car. That one is with my driver" He replied.......

I was very happy to see that he has grown his business, now to three taxis and still runs the newspaper distribution.

I expect that in another 10 years, Mbogo will have about 20 vehicles in operation and if the media gets wind of his story; many people will find it hard to believe that one can build an empire from selling newspapers.....

Interesting story to start the week. Great story but could I fathom a guess that he stayed in mukuru thereby limiting his expenses?? Is his family back in machinani where living expenses low and you eat of your garden and cows and he is hustling in Nairobi??

Yes; he lives in Mukuru.

No; his family is not in "Machinani". It is in the Mukuru house

Good one. There are many ways to make money. What holds many of us back is pride, fear, comfort zones and listening too much to other people's opinions.

@ Mukiha, in 20 years... dont be too sure.

During the next elections, a presidential candidate will whip tribal emotions saying that' 'its their time to eat' like Mbogo and tribe have been 'helped' to eat.

Then during the subsequent post-election violence, my well educated but lazy younger brother who also live in mukuru; and spends most of time outside Jubilee insurance building discussing politics, and also a heckler for hire... will claim Mbogo's taxis as rightfully his as was acquired by 'our/ taxpayers money'.

My younger bro is sure about it... his hero politician who is always right told them that Mbogo and tribe obtains government money from a wall, upon presenting his ID card to verify his tribe...and he showed photos/video of an ATM queue and people leaving with cash handed by the gvt official behind the wall.

Having said that, Mbogo is a hero. Pity he may never make it to be a public role model, as modern youth still think the ultimate is a 'celebrity'. As for his making it to Senator/ Governor/ MP - he'd have to add 'pharmacy products' in his portfolio...

Perhaps you are young...too young.

From newspaper sub-agent employed by a vendor and selling less than 100 copies in 2004 to unofficial distributor selling 1,000 copies and with 3 taxis (2 "new") in 2010. You call that "too long"

What were you earning in 2004 and what are you earning today?

Madman, I may be. But even a mad man can see two things in @...foolish, @kirita and @...Wangu: 1) an ostrich which buries its head in the sand not to 'see' trouble, and 2) A threesome drunk in too much emotion.

You are counseled to always temper emotion with some reason.

What I described about Mbogo and retrogressive politics is drawn out of a REAL case that happened in 2007/8. The similarity: like Mbogo, the 'victim' was a taxi baron.

We must confront the past - it has solutions for the future.

Call me a cynic or sceptic. Sometimes there is more than meets the eye. So unless you have a sit down with Mbogo and really have a heart to heart and honest chat with him, you may be wrongly ascribing his success to the Taxi business.

It could be the taxi business but it could be any number of factors.

It's likely that there's more to this.... but would you rather this story was not true?

I have had a good talk with him - he consults me on financial/business matters

I proudly read this story on Monday and i was very happy for Mbogo. But yesterday night I had a change of heart. I will soon be paying 2000 shillings for my NHIF rate (PS: This is already higher than my AAR rates which come to 17k per year after my no claim bonus). My direct tax is already 30% of my monthly income and the indirect taxes are still hitting through VAT etc.

I then though about mbogo the hard working Taxi driver/ new paper vendor/ super businessman. Do you think mbogo income tax to KRA? How much NHIF will he be paying?

Mbogo most probably earns much more than I do but I should still support him by paying more for my NHIF.

Mbogo and other slum lord millionaires should pay their dues. KRA and NHIF should set up shop in these slums and demand for their dues. Mbogo should be the rallying cry of the already over taxed and over burdened white collared Kenyans.

MBOGO SHOULD PAY TAXES AND INCREASED NHIF RATES!!!

@ Conquistidor sarcasm is always lost in Wazua! It takes a bright mind to get it.

Agreed; Mbogo must pay his taxes and other levies. I have been advising to do that. Last time we talked, he was to sign up for TOT. I don't know if he did.
