Was reading about this device and methinks, rather I envisage a few problems:

1 - The news itself - the publicity - weakens the purpose. Rapists now know about it, ergo will look out for it (and I think its not rocket science to remove it or disable it - i.e. carry a cucumber along as "cannon fodder" to take the hit). I think this should have been done covertly in order to be truly effective.

2 - It could result in greater violence and even anal rape (I should thank a friend for pointing this out)

4 - I think there was too much emotion behind its conception such that its not a very objective solution.

So, taking this argument ahead - is this device progress in the right direction or a step backward. I think its a seemingly BIG step - but on a path which offers no more steps. A legal route may have small steps but offers a path that people can follow to find a solution.

Wazua - do we have yet a system to do opinion polls?

@PastorM - RSA has an unusually high rape rate - I'm no historian or sociologist, but I think if we look at the backdrop - this is a society where the majority had been in a state of civilian unrest under apartheid and the war silently was waged - when we think of wars, wherever it has happened in the world, pillage and rape go hand in hand as rewards for the combatants - and while RSA may not be in the same state, there might be those among the population who are still under privileged and feel that sense of "entitlement" as they struggle in a silent war (joblessness, inequity, etc)....but again, I'm no sociologist/historian/psychologist.

Having said that - what is your position - is this progressive or regressive?

I should point out, while making this arguement, that I do know someone close, who was raped when she was barely 11 years old - I have a daughter and would definitely sever both heads off a rapist if i caught one...

But, here we have a device that is widely available and perhaps likely even to be abused - perhaps rather than have the "biting" effect - why not have a small dose of tranquilizer...such that the rapist suffers instant flaccidity (nothing like killing his ego and the moment)....and have such doses remain in the system so for a repeat offender who encounters this tranquilizer - that the second dose has a permanent effect? That would be justice out there - no need for castration/imprisonment etc - it would be passive disarmament...

@leona - my understanding is that the thing latches on, prompting the attacker to withdraw and leave with the parting gift....thats the reason I think that now everyone knows about it, those with intentions of raping will find a way of "baiting" it first...

And to those old class like @njunge and @mukiha who like to eat only at night when the lights are completely and totally switched off and bulbs ngolewad from the bulb holders,Your days are numbered because mama boii will just insert the gadget to harm you in order to settle domestic squables!!!

I think its better than nothing. e.g For those women who work odd hours yet live in some insecure location where chances of getting raped are very high,It would be great to arm themselves with the condom. But is it recyclable?And can it be made more affordable or even given free in women clinics? Just seen somewhere ati it can only be removed surgically?Goodness!!

The problem i have with Munchin is. when do women decide to wear it.When do one decide- i'll gonna get raped so let me wear the Munchin!
Am imagining the rapist who has been munched would definitely become violent and even kill the victim.Is this deterent?
