But this system where voters rank candidates by preference would be a disaster because even now where people just tick a box, the number of spoilt votes remains high. I am happy

Direct election of a President was introduced in Kenya in 1992. In the prior elections, the leader of the majority party became the president. From 1969 to 1992, there was only 1 legal political party, KANU, so, the leader of KANU always became the President. From 1969 to 1992, there was only 1 legal political party, KANU, so, the leader of KANU always became the President. Prior to 1969, there were the KADU, KPU, APP, NPP etc etc. Check your facts.Kenya was a single party state but several candidates could be cleared to contest for any post including the presidency.
