KCB making more than twice the profit of Barclays in the half year 2015.
Sometime back Barclays was making 10 times KCB profit.
This bank is dead trying to resuscitate itself

It only operates in Kenya hence no regional growth and and space in KE becoming competitive by the day.

For a bank, the Kenyan market size is adequate. They only need to work harder. Their elitist mentality is what is ailing them. Pesa iko mashinani!

Its reflective of how wealth has been distributed over time from people who traditionally banked with Barclays to the common Mwananchi.

BBK shot themselves in the foot. It was THE BANK in Kenya in the 90s and early 2000s. SCBK was a distant second. KCB was propped up by GoK.

Then came some bone-headed decision to reduce branches, kick out aspiring Kenyans as customers, etc.

Equity came in & bought the branches that BBK & SCBK were selling. They also took over the customers. And the tables were turned.

In addition, BBK (& SCBK) are restricted to Kenya thus they cannot expand beyond KE. That's OK for customers since BBK is part of ABSA but not for shareholders. If BBK had become BBEA [absorbing BBU & BBT] there would have been much to celebrate for BBK shareholders.

BBK is for those shareholders who want a steady [not growth] bank for steady dividends.
For the rest of us... Equity, I&M, NIC, DTB, etc beckon. These home-grown banks have got strong local operations plus are growing their African footprint.

If ABSA or Barclays Africa really wanted to grow the bank they should have allowed it to open the insurance arm and acquire the majority stake in First Assurance.
Barclays Africa opening the insurance arm is the same mistake that Standard Bank did when they separated the insurance arm from CFCStanbic Holdings. This is just a way of repartriating the profits to South Africa.
The insurance arm may not make a big headway and may suffer the sme fate as Liberty which has of late stagnated or shrunk as other insurance companies take a much bigger share of the market.
Case in point CIC and UAP insurance which overtook Liberty

Insurance money is free float and cheap source of deposits. If Barclays Kenya get it right, they will make a tidy sum from the bancassurance offshoot
