Local sources were reporting the same as early as 2013.

Bloomberg have just copied news on a slow day

I wonder though whether they managed to count the corruption beneficiaries. This would be possible by counting real estate assets, since this is the favourite investment of Kenyans.

Read this and you'll get the answer to that question.

Am telling you the counties will take Kenya the Greece way. There seems to be no concern.Does it mean that locals do not have any other avenue of recalling governors? The Kisumu guy who lived in a hotel should be made to pay back what he spent. Na huyu Ouko what is his job ? only saying so and so spent this and that does he want the wanjikus to go ask the guys to pay back?

Those in the know how , who can actually force the governor to pay back what he "ate".
What is the work of the auditor general? apart from writing reports?

It usually excludes a person's residence. So someone with a house worth 100m shirrings and 50 million in other assets after factoring liabilities wouldnt ordinarily be considered a dollar millionaire.

OK. Lets try this one.How many Masais do we have with more that 150 acres of land going for more than 700,000.00 per acre. The point is most of us just think about the known tycoons.

What if I have more than one residence?

The reason major lists exclude the person's residence is the need to emphasize liquidity and quality of life stability. A person sitting on some 1,000 acres deep in Kathonzweni probably has more than a million dollars in assets THEORETICALLY. But if they are living in a mud hut and barely able to earn/spend 1,000 shillings a day, their day to day economic impact is irrelevant. The concept of 'millionaire' is closely intertwined with spending power.

If countries like the United States or Japan included a person's residence, they would each probably have more than 50 million millionaires lol

@innairobi that is correct. Also imagine the cases of startup guys, they get some funding and their companies are worth a lot of money on paper, but all the cash is being used to run the business, the entrepreneurs are usually broke beyond belief, despite running a multimillion company.

That's why it's important to count liquid wealth. That is attached to spending power.

Actually the start-up guy's wealth would be calculated even if he's dead broke in his pocket. Most guy's building wealth understand cash at hand is worthless.

The concept of wealth as calculated by Economists is much related to GDP; how much do you contribute to the GDP?.

Remember GDP is how much wealth is circulating within an economy, not how much it's worth.

Example; if you have a 100m home in Karen where you employ 1 watchmen at 60k per year, then your contribution to the economy is 60k for that year.

If however you live in Kitengela and have a pub employing 20 waitress 1.2m per year, then your contribution to the economy is 1.2m.

Wealth and liquidity also have no correlation. A 90year old with 10m in the bank living hand to mouth in Nyeri fall in the same category as a 'poor' masai who has 1000 acres of land.
