Dark yellow York in eggs is usually from Kienyenji chicken.

Last week I bought a 15 pack of the same. The things had an orange coloured York.I cannot define the feeling I got but I crushed all of them and drained them in the sink. What is that?Experts please what are we being fed on?Are they safe?

The egg is the sum total of what the chicken eats, irrespective of its genetic make-up. Same as quail. Gabbage in, gabbage out. Know your egg supplier and what they feed their chicken.

Someone once explained to me that the deep yellow/orange pigment is a sign that the chicken fed on leafy vegetation and the lighter colour is mostly seen in chicken that fed on cereals mainly or commercial feeds. I have not researched on it myself though.

I stopped eating eggs last year. I once bought eggs and the york was reddish in color. Nobody could touch them in my house.

@BigC- Simple- Its chemicals. Its put either in the feeds or water and then goes into egg formation and contents. The yolk can even be made green or red depending on the market requirements.

I used to keep chicken years ago as a side hussle and get it from me, today i do not touch chicken except the free range i keep in my compound.

Things are getting worse day by day.I once went to fix some computers for a well known chicken farm along Mombasa Road, after fixing the computers one of the workers took me round the chicken houses at one point i noted a pile of satchets ,which to my surprise are supplements that are dissolved in water for rapid chicken growth. It only takes 35 days for the chicken to be ready for consumption.I was later offered slaughtered chicken by the farm manager and i declined. The manager could not understand why.
From the experience i had i vowed never to take chicken unless ni zile zimefugwa na my Mum huko nyumbani.
There are also supplements that enhance egg production, when i get an opportunity i will take a photo of one of the supplements.

@bigchick relax, don't worry about yolk colour.....

www.en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yolk

Yolk color
The color of an egg yolk is directly
influenced by the makeup of the
chicken feed. [16] Egg yolk color is
generally improved with a feed
containing a large component of
yellow, fat-soluble pigments, such
as the carotenes in dark green
plant material, for example alfalfa.
Although much emphasis is put
onto the color of the egg yolk, it
does not reliably reflect the
nutritional value of an egg. For
example, some of the natural
pigments that produce a rich yolk
color are xanthophylls without
much nutritional value, rather
than the carotenoids that act as
provitamin A in the body. Also, a
diet rich in vitamin A itself, but
without A-provitamins or
xanthophylls, can produce
practically colourless yolks that
are just as nutritious as any richly
colored yolks. Since unhealthy
chickens produce fewer and
smaller eggs, farmers ensure that
whatever the source of their feed,
the quality is adequate, so there
is not likely to be much difference
in the nutritional quality of the
eggs. [17]
Yolks, particularly from free-range
eggs, can be of a wide range of
colors, ranging from nearly white,
through yellow and orange to
practically red, but even olive
green, depending on the pigments
in their food. Feeding fowls large
amounts of capsicum peppers for
example, tends to result in red or
deep orange yolks. This has
nothing to do with adding colors
such as cochineal to eggs in
cooking.[18]
