As some haters are busy hating on Equity Bank, Dr. James Mwangi is busy growing the bank and picking awards left right and center. Dr. Mwangi just won the Young World Entrepreneur of the Year 2012.

If the haters are to be believed, then everyone in the "who is who" of the world financial sector is wrong if all the awards Dr. James Mwangi and Equity have won over the years are anything to go by!

I'm glad I put my money where my mouth is!

The independent judging panel was a distinguished group of former Entrepreneur Of The Year Winners. The panel was chaired by Ruben Vardanian, President, Troika Dialog, of Russia. Joining Ruben on the panel was:

Haryanto Adikoesoeme of PT AKR Corporindo Tbk (Indonesia)

Kunio Namekata of TMI Associates (Japan)

Lui Jiren of Neusoft Corporation (China)

Michael Spencer of ICAP plc (UK)

Rebecca MacDonald of Just Energy Group Inc. (Canada),

Rodrigo Alonso Herrera Aspra of Genomma Lab Internacional (Mexico)

Steve Case of America Online (US)

@QW25091985 - Are you saying this group was compromised?

But James Arthur Baldwin put it best when he said "I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone... they will be forced to deal with pain"

why is it that you guys are defending eqty so much anyway? is it the best bank? no, is it the employer of choice? no. are its employees the most overworked? yes. if it is such good, why does it not have cctv cameras in its banking halls. that guy may receive accolades all he wants but equity is still wanting.

So this is just a HUGE conspiracy and the who is who in the world of Finance and Banking along with all the institution that matter are in on it?

why have I never looked at it from that point of angle? One James Mwangi has managed to manipulate all this Global organizations! Boy, this Dr. Mwangi is good!!!

1. What are the metrics? What was being rewarded?
2. Does Mwangi = Equity?
3. Does it not spell disaster for Equity if its built on the cult of Mwangi rather than institutions?
4. Who will eulogize the small scale farmers that Mwangi bought out at a pittance to consolidate his grip on Equity?
5. Do you believe that the finance experts you talk about truly know the story of Equity?

The world has been hungry for a success story coming out of Africa so you have to put the M-Pesa and Equity stories in perspective!

Come on shares or no shares, QWsomething1985 is solidly right on this one. If E&Y are sponsoring the award, and they also do business with Equity, I can't help to think that they are massaging the hand that sends business their way? The award loses its shine just cause of that one little connection there.

I can't read any bias into any of those awards; Do the any of the 'awarders' do direct business with Equity that I don't know about? All of them cannot be wrong, so obviously he deserved them - I didn't say James Mwangi is incompetent - I am just saying I have less faith in the objectivity of the award itself based on the business connection between the 2 firms.

@Maich,...also consider where companies run promotions/raffles/competitions ...there is usually a disclaimer that Employees and close relatives are not eligible. Employees and relatives that have participated, won and then discovered are usually stripped of the prize.
The objective is to eliminate the perception of bias, even when we know sometimes pure chance/luck are at play. It is the same sort of principle I am applying with my argument.

Lets give credit where its due. There is a reason why Stanford, Columbia sch of business and University of Lagos have found Equity bank to be a worthy case study for their academic research.

The questions I asked have not been responded to.

fyi, even the collapsed Lehman Brothers of this world were once case studies for Ivy League Schools.

Unga Ltd also forms one of the best case studies for any aspiring MBA keen on getting real world education.

Failures often offer better lessons. I am waiting for change of government at least 4 times before passing my judgement on Mwangi's business savvy. The likes of Barclays and KCB may not attract much press/awards but have shown the resilience required of financial institutions. More importantly Mwangi was being rewarded as an individual. When will Equity win the awards? Isnt there something wrong when he keeps on winning but it doesnt translate to similar awards for his institution?

You must be kidding!!! Right???

On post #5 alone, I have given a couple of links!

Best Bank in Kenya - 2012

Best Managed Company in Africa - Banking and Finance Sector

Best Initiative in Support of SMEs and the Millennium Development Goals - In the whole of Africa!

Seriously, you can't even Google??? Equity has won loads of Local and International awards every year. Can we get facts before arguing?

They (lehman bro's) still are a case study....they say there are 2 or more views of a story...a case study is a story WHAT the story is all about is what matters.
PS. They will do a case study on you when you do your thing differently.
