hi all,

for those of us who happen to reside far from public hospitals and are regular drinkers of the famous changaa lased with Methanol, the antidote is Ethanol followed by baking powder...this to be administered immediately the poisoning victim starts to complain...

simple things but very effective...tusker, guiness etc and baking powder!!!!

...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...

Tusker, Pilsner etc. works wonders. If one takes it immediately they realize things are not okay, they will not even get blind. There was a time sometime back doctors gave beer to guys who were rushed to hospital after a changaa + methanol tragedy misadventure and they came out of it 100% unscathed. Was even on TV.

The other day when a dude [who was going blind] was explaining to the press what happened, I couldn't help but shout "Someone give him a cold tusker before it's too late!". Too bad it was on TV and it wasn't even live!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

It is not the methanol itself that is poisonous, rather the formaldehyde that it is converted to by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase before it turns it to formic acid. The enzyme catalyses both the forward and reverse reaction and formaldehyde is just an intermediate.

The enzyme has a higher affinity for ethanol. Therefore taking your Tusker/Pilsner increases the concentration of ethanol in your blood, causing the enzyme to convert fomaldehyde back to methanol as it seeks to 'attack' the ethanol.

Downside (or benefit depending on how you look at it) is that you will have to maintain an elevated level of ethanol (stay drunk) until all the methanol is released from your body. And that can take a while as your body is poor at removing methanol.

As a side note:
Did you know that some people are genetically pre-disposed to alcoholism due to the conformation/type of alcohol dehydrogenase their body produces?

some of the kibera guys were faking the poisoning so as to get the free vodka being served at kenyatta hospital. to crown it all, they refused to pay the hospital bill.

but how given the medical guys will first check
for your random blood sugar level which, if you have been imbibing, is low and hence you are given some sugar solution (dexstrose)?

And yuk, that formaldehyde is for preserving dead bodies!

blood sugar is not a diagnostic test for methanol poisoning. All one needs to do is to suggest that you drank some of the stuff. Then viola! A drip in one arm, vodka in your other hand:)
