@nurse try Dollar cost averaging. Regularly invest a specific amount, on a monthly or quarterly basis. Go for a dominant company in a defensive industry (one that will always make money) think safcom, eabl, nmg, one of the big banks. You can set aside a small amount to try your luck in the smaller companies.

@nurse the speculation at this stage as a beginner can be suicidal. Select the stocks u wonna invest for a while or with a long term strategy. Visit at this blog(wazua) learn by what your hear the opinions they help anyway.But later do your homework the company/companies u chose to pick even if you dont buy its advisable just to know..enquire how to read the(balance sheet),the graph.Form a habit of reading business columns from local newspapers.

Wanyina, I noted in the fantasy market you are still sitting on cash. I guess you are waiting for the downturn.

@ Nurse1,
.. my point is: as you research and learn about the companies you want to invest in, you can try the fantasy game, where you invest virtual money, this can help you learn without making serious mistakes with real cash.
Time is money, so money is time. Money saved is time gained in reverse! Money stores your life’s energy. You expend your energy, get paid money, and store that money for a future purchase made in a currency.

@Nurse : How short is your short-term? 3months,6months..because to make a substantial amount of profit within a short-term period requires good skill,and understanding the markets BUT the opportunities are there. Select a few companies..preferably the cheap ones,trading at < 30Ksh..analyze them,prospectives in each..future news that may excite the market,fundamentals e.t.c..I bought 10,000 Coop Bank shares at 10KSh 4 months ago and i sold them recently at 16Ksh..So,it's possible

@Nurse,

Going forward,this market will ride on positive sentiments of the new constitution.This may not favour short term speculators but it's likely to make hundreds of millionaires in the medium to long term.....The only rider being how we behave during the implementation/election period overlooking 2012........As for picks,financials and industrials look really bright.....To give you a glimpse of what to expect,look at the market performance just before 2002 elections and the period thereafter up to MID 2006.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
