Quick update. I did my online return just the other day, and the system didnt demand for an ETR number.

The KRA online filing system has gone off-line!

I've been trying to file my VAT all morning but it keeps saying "Sorry, the service requested is not available at this moment. Please try later."

Oh; and the PW problem has gotten worse!

This month I discovered that KRA has developed a TAXPAYER SOFTWARE for doing your returns off-line and then uploading at your convenient time.

Haiya-e; are people still doing their annual tax returns online; and clogging the system?

I'm trying to file my VAT for June and system says the service "is unavailable at this moment"

Anyone succeeded today?
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

KRA has no interest in sending people to jail; even though they do have that option.... after taking you to court.

KRA's primary aim is to collect the tax.

So, if you miss the deadline for VAT, you incur an automatic penalty of 20% of the tax due or sh10,000 whichever is higher.

Thus even if your had a "nil- return", you will be fined sh10,000.

After that, the tax due attracts 2% interest per month delayed.

UPDATE:
I called KRA and they advised that I was using an outdated TaxPayer software, Ver 1.5.8

I updated it to the current Ver 1.5.9 and, voila, the returns went through.

I wish the online system could have advised me on that instead of the meaningless message "service you requested is not available..."
