I am solidly behind you on this one, bruh!
Thika Road expansion is the kind of mistake one would make when high!

According to the report that @yeke-squared constantly refers to, 49% of us walk to work, 42% take a mathree to work, while 9% of us drive to work. Given a RELIABLE public transport system, some of the 9% would ditch their junks at home; half of the mathree users would gladly ditch the yellow-lines for a train - If you do not believe me, go stand at the railway footbridge near Kenya Polytechnic at 5.15pm (and brace yourself for the stampede )!

For the life of me I do not see the wisdom in expanding the roads into the city while existing roads within the CBD remain constant. Er...how that is supposed to reduce congestion remains a mystery.

Methinks expansion of the transport network should be two-fold; road and rail.
For roads, obliterate the roundabouts, increase the bypasses and make it painfully expensive for those 9-to-5 show-offs who plonk their jalopies in scarce parking spaces in order to get an opportunity to wave their keys to their office buddies.
For rail, increase capacity, speed, frequency and reach.

IMHO it would be foolhardy for Kenyans to pursue the American transport model instead of the Eco-friendly European model that emphasizes more on efficient, green and accessible public transport that leans more on rail.

Expanding roads without creating flyovers is one of the reasons why MSA road expansion did not end jams...at least for Thika road they're creating a few flyovers at Kimbo, Githurai, e.t.c.

The flyovers you refer to are to far away from the city.

When the expanded Thika road reaches Pangani, it forks out into three directions:
1] Left towards Juja road down past Kariokor market and onwards to Marikiti
2] Straight on along Muranga rd. then over Globe R/about through university way and joins Uhuru highway
3] Right along forest road, past the museum and also into uhuru highway.

If you look at the termination points, you will see that they are already saturated with traffic. hence what will happen is that the queues will be over shorter distances, but the time in the jam will remain the same.

This even before we factor in the addition vehicles due to the great Thika Rd migration that has already begun.

The thread is very interesting. But you need to read Thika Road expansion with the northern/eastern by pass. The Eastern by-pass is going to divert a lot of traffic from Thika Road. They have done very good progress except the three bridges in between Ruiru and Kangundo Road. The fly-over Kangundo Road is progressing well. Most of the flower farms delivering flowers to the airport are now using this bypass and anyone heading to the airport. The government needs now to work on the southern By-pass and the journey to the city will reduce in terms of time.
