The Afro cinema continues..... the DJ from Madagascar will not want to accept that his concoction is not effective - he will still push for it. Are you dismissing it because it was promoted by an african? For your information, German scientists have proven that plant extracts from the artemesia plant WORK against coronavirus. Africans should stop their inferiority complex. At least madagascar did something about the disease unlike you kenyans who are waiting for mzungus to solve all your problems. Wajinga nyinyi. https://www.dw.com/en/ge...-coronavirus/a-53944514
Quote:Researchers at Germany's Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam have been working with researchers from Berlin's Free University and other institutions for weeks, testing whether Artemisia annua plant extract and its artemisinin derivatives, could eventually be used to fight the novel coronavirus.
"We extracted pure substances from the Artemisia plant and combined it with the virus," explained Peter Seeberger from the Max Planck Institute, who is co-head of the study along with the chemist Kerry Gilmore.
"Since I work with combinations of Artemisia plants, I am very familiar with the interesting activities of plants that can work against different diseases, including a whole series of viruses," said Seeberger.
He said that's why it made sense to him and his colleagues to look into the possible effects on Sars-CoV-2.
Surprising results
Researchers found that the leaves of Artemisia extract showed anti-viral activity after being extracted with pure ethanol or distilled water.
The anti-viral activity increased considerably when the ethanol extract was combined with coffee.
"I was surprised that Artemisia extracts worked much better as a derivative, and that adding coffee increased the anti-viral activity," said Klaus Osterrieder, professor of virology at the Free University.
In April, Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina promoted an unproven herbal concoction made from the Artemisia annua plant produced in the country called Covid-Organics.
Plant extracts have long been used in different parts of the world to treat infectious diseases.
Artemisia has traditionally been used to treat fever, and its derivative artemisinin is now used as the basis of an anti-malaria combination therapy used to successfully treat millions of adults and children each year.

Now that German scientists have given the concortion a stamp of approval, I know kenyans will now rush to boil the artemesia and drink it while praising it just because msungu has said that it works, but they dismissed it when an african who developed it said it worked. Msungu has been selling the same herbal tea as a cure but doesnt want the african who came up with the idea to profit from his (african) innovation. This is a serious case of intellectual theft and Madagascar should sue and demand compensation from the americans. https://www.rfi.fr/en/af...b-tests-say-researchers
Quote:Scientists in Germany released data on Wednesday from laboratory tests showing that extracts of the artemisia plant are active against the virus causing Covid-19. The research is separate from claims by Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina about the Covid-Organics herbal tea, but perhaps provides more of a scientific basis for clinical trials and research.
“The results are very promising,” said Peter Seeberger, managing director of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, adding that future clinical trials are what really counts.
Madagascar’s President Rajoelina has repeatedly praised a herbal concoction of the Artemisia annua plant, promoting it to other leaders as a Malagasy “cure” for Covid-19, despite reservations by the World Health Organisation about the effectiveness of the Covid-Organics drink and lack of data.
Delving deeper into artemisia
Scientists from the Max Planck Institute in Potsdam worked with the department of virology at the Free University of Berlin to further investigate artemisia.
Extracts were used from specially bred Artemisia annua plants developed and grown by ArtemiLife Inc, a company based in Kentucky, US. The business is already selling ArtemiTea and ArtemiCoffee online, which contains the plant.
Two extracts of artemisia were developed by the researchers, one using distilled water and another ethanol. These were compared against a third, the ethanol extract mixed with coffee, and artemisinin, a derivative compound of the artemisia plant already used as part of combined treatments for malaria.
The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, carried out in vitro tests using monkey lung cells. It treated the cells with the different formulations and then infected them with the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 to determine the anti-viral activity.
The two extracts resulted in less of the virus forming, with the ethanol and coffee found to be the most active. Pure artemisinin on its own did not provide much antiviral activity.
“There is an effect, it is repeatable between laboratories,” said Klaus Osterrieder, who conducted the viral tests at the Free University of Berlin. The research was verified by a second laboratory in Denmark who carried out their own tests to ensure consistency of the results.
Future clinical trials
Research on the artemisia extracts is expected to feed into an ongoing clinical trial at the University of Kentucky. It is hoped ArtemiTea, ArtemiCoffee and a tablet form will be incorporated into ongoing trials with patients suffering from Covid-19 by the summer of 2020.
The first phase of the trial will last a month, involving six patients being treated for 14 days, according to Jill Kolesar, an expert in pharmacy at the University of Kentucky. The US university has an existing relationship with ArtemiLife Inc.
Kerry Gilmore, an organic chemist at the Max Planck Institute, said there are at least 10 active compounds within the artemisia extracts. Further research will help determine whether individual compounds or a combination of them are responsible for the activity against Covid-19.
The addition of coffee to the artemisia extract could have a type of protective effect on other compounds, reducing their degradation. “Certain compounds within coffee have been shown to have anti-viral activities,” Gilmore added.
This research is the latest contribution to several efforts to use the Artemisia annua plant for treatment of Covid-19. South African scientist Frank van der Kooy at North-West University has launched an effort to conduct clinical trials on artemisia, teaming up with Jerome Munyangi, a Congolese doctor from the faculty of medicine at the University of Kolweri-Lualaba.
But it is Madagascar’s President Rajoelina who had grabbed the spotlight for his promotion of the Malagasy herbal tea, despite questions surrounding the scientific basis for his claims and the actual ingredients of the drink itself besides artemisia.
“We have tried very hard to obtain this drink that’s apparently taken by many people, unfortunately we’ve not been able to obtain samples of that drink,” said Peter Seeberger of the Max Planck Institute, adding that they would like to test it, as part of their research.
Artemisia has been long-known to have uses for the treatment of malaria and drugs have been developed using artemisinin, a derivative of one of the plant’s compounds.
Research has also been conducted into artemisia’s use in combatting HIV and its effectiveness against SARS, another type of coronavirus. Proverbs 13:11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.

Sad that when a cure is developed by african scientists in african laboratories, the drugs are termed "unproven concortions", but when developed at a laboratory in Oxford, they are readily termed drugs and vaccines. Never mind that all scientists wheteher in Oxford or madagascar use the same scientific principles and procedures. This racism in science must stop. Africans should open their eyes. BTW the madagascar covid cure was developed by madagascan scientists at the equivalent of kenyas KEMRI or US CDC, not that the president just woke up and came up with the herbal tea. https://www.theelephant....an-african-renaissance/ Quote:Madagascar caught the world’s attention in April 2020 after announcing that it had made an extraordinary breakthrough in the field of medicine. The Madagascar Institute of Applied Research (IMRA), which describes itself as “dedicated to biodiversity conservation and the discovery of drugs from natural products”, announced the development of Covid Organics (CVO) from the artemisia plant. Promoted as an herbal remedy that prevents and cures those who have tested positive for COVID-19, the drug has caused a sensation in a continent that has been marginalised by an international scientific community that views Africa as a spectator rather than as a player.
No one epitomises this innovative spirit more than IMRA founder, Prof Albert Rakoto, whose earlier studies on the artemisia plant have contributed immensely to the development of Covid Organics. Rakoto’s insistence on blending indigenous and conventional medicine is vital because it is likely to solve two problems with a single solution, retaining traditional medicine practices that are readily available within most African communities while adapting modern scientific trends to improve the effectiveness of plants such as artemisia in order to complement the strained healthcare infrastructure.
Recently, there have been thinly veiled attempts—mainly by western mainstream media outlets—to cast aspersions on the drug. Reuters described the herbal remedy as a “cure” , the quotation marks serving to cast doubts on the claims made by Madagascar about Covid Organics, while FRANCE24 brazenly and without batting an eyelid went ahead to call it “The president’s controversial ‘miracle cure’” in one of their news stories. Some of these problematic media framings go beyond the often false premise that nothing good can come out of Africa. Instead, they are part of a deliberate, but subtle ideological battle that persistently discredits anything African that might be of benefit to the world.
The use of the word “miracle” by FRANCE24 captures this vividly because it implies superstition – some irrational belief in the healing powers of the drug – instead of the deployment of homegrown science and logic in responding to a virus that has ravaged western countries more than any other part of the world. Some Africans have joined the fray in ridiculing the wonder drug.
The leading proponent of the drug is Andry Rajoelina, the wiry-looking Malagasy president with his signature toothy smile. Before he ascended to power, the 46-year old was an event organiser. He has progressively become the poster boy for the drug, and more importantly, for the shaping and reimagining the course of the African Renaissance. Through various interviews granted to media platforms, Rajoelina continues to insist that nothing will stop the continent from devising homegrown solutions to respond to local and even global problems. His memorable rallying cry was expressed during a television session with FRANCE24 when he asked: “What if this remedy had been discovered by a European country, instead of Madagascar? Would people doubt it so much?”

Madagascar had even conducted clinical trials but the west rubbished everything calling the drug a concortion. Sad to see that some PhD scientists are considered mainstream while others not. https://www.timesofisrae...remedy-for-coronavirus/
Quote:“Covid-Organics will be used as prophylaxis, that is for prevention, but clinical observations have shown a trend towards its effectiveness in curative treatment,” said Dr. Charles Andrianjara, IMRA’s director general.
But its safety and effectiveness have not been assessed internationally, nor has any data from trials been published in peer-reviewed studies. Mainstream scientists have warned of the potential risk from untested herbal brews. Proverbs 13:11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.
