This is wholesale PR. No one will engage in conventional war; US nor Iran, and Persia is winning big in proxy war in the ME.

Expect de-escalation soon.

of course no one wants war! Iran has to "save face" somehow. I actually think Iran (the state) may be the least of their worries - that action pissed off many muslims and they are the problem. The state can be controlled by a series of stick/carrot moves.

This is very true.

However you don't need a war to harm Trump. I expect a number of Iran/China actions to fix him in this election year.

For Iran threatening to close the straights of Hormuz will be irresistible.

China will likely refuse to buy beans from the Trump supporting heartland.

Among other, dirty tricks

True..
Meaning a major blunder.

Talk of shooting oneself in the foot.. literally.

Now most airlines staying away, even overflying Iran & Iraq is considered risky!

Time to climb down from acting on emotions (most of it orchestrated), sober up and take rational steps if they are to help their economy from further suffering.

Deeply embarrassing for Iran. It's like those school fights where bully slaps you then you turn around to return a perfect blow you miss and fall on the mud and people say WTF!. Kerfuffle is the word for it. The iranian kerfuffle

Even Trump has an egg on his face coz warnings have been all over that escalation would have undesired consequences.
He can't escape blame for causing the death of innocent civilians. Canadians, especially, must be very livid.

You guys are so ignorant to believe this. Or you are agents of Uncle Sam and Zionists brainwashing the ignorant masses. This is a case of "giving a dog a bad name". Who does not know the one responsible for shooting down planes, or doing inside jobs like 9II? Didn't Uncle Sam shoot down another plane over Russia when they tried to frame Russia?

Talk of crying louder than the bereaved!
Even Iran themselves can not spurn such cock & bull stories as to suggest US shot the plane.
In embarrassment they attempted to blame Engine failure/malfunction blah blah blah.

Every straight thinking person can see the obvious.

Accidents do happen, Iran should swallow their pride and own up to honour the departed while letting the healing on the family members begin.

If one cares about Iran and the welfare of Iranians, one should give them the right advice, - abandon the hardline stance, learn to coexist with the rest of the middle East nations, especially Israel, then things will begin to fall in place.

The policy of chest thumping has only brought them suffering and humiliation.

Look, even in times of near zero military pressure they can not shoot missiles without inflicting harm on themselves!

They should build that nuclear bomb just like Israel and everyone will coexist.

I agree with you @Murchr. Some people like @nandwa want others to be weaken while others develop nuclear! For me, I would rather say, others to rise up: China, Russia etc. Putin himself said: there is need for balance of power in the world to tame the bully. And this is developing slowly... We're headed for the big stand-off.

When there is balance of power in the world, conflicts will be minimal. But as it is now, the bully is trying so hard to provoke, then when the other party defends himself, he is labelled terrorist... They provoke you and when you defend yourself, they ask you why are you defending yourself! Yaani no one has the right to defend themselves...

Under international pressure (sema kumulikwa), Iran admits it shot down jetliner by mistake
Quote:
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran on Saturday acknowledged that its armed forces “unintentionally” shot down the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed earlier this week, killing all 176 aboard, after the government had repeatedly denied Western accusations that it was responsible.

Iran on Saturday said it unintentionally shot down the Ukrainian airliner that crashed this week killing 176 people, calling it an "unforgivable mistake".
The Ukraine International Airlines plane came down on Wednesday shortly after Iran launched missiles at bases hosting American forces in Iraq in response to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, one of Iran's top generals, in a US drone strike.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake," Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tweeted.

Earlier, Iran's official IRNA news agency had published a statement from the military saying the Boeing 737 was mistaken for a "hostile plane" at a time when enemy threats were at the highest level.

Almost think this was intentional to divert attention from lack of retaliation power on the General's killing - collateral damage.

Wonder why Iran didn't close it's air space with so much activity, and also noting B52 Bombers were just stacked up nearby. But, much as Iran has accepted this crush was due to human error, i still blame one DJT.

If the Iranian general hadn't been assassinated in the first place, this would not have happened.

Though they are not Angelic, I would be very slow to accuse them of such. That would not only be heartless but also a crime that would warrant UN security Council to move in.

Their utterances in the run up;
that they "would set on fire that which US covets so much" is downright reckless and open to speculations.
