The strict meaning of dam is the barrier. The reservoir is created by the dam

Despite the heavy rains that have pounded the country for more than a month, the Ndakaini Dam, one of Nairobi’s main water supply towers, has no water.

Officials say the dam lacks a reservoir to harvest water and residents will have to put up with water rationing until next year

One would have expected the long rains to bring residents’ woes to an end but water levels at Ndakaini dam is just at 30 per cent

What in the world does that mean?

Incompetence = Kizungu mingi catwalk. I thought a dam is a reservoir?

Indeed. A large body of water requires... another body of water? I am befuddled by this obfuscating vocabulary.

Your rain water tank would be useless without a roof to collect the water. And Ndaikaini is a tank that stores water for nairobi. The water needs to be harvested from somewhere before storing in ndakaini. That is what she meant.

They issued a clarification and said that whereas it is raining much in Nrb etc, the same cannot be said of the aberdares where most of the water originates. So far the capacity is at 30% and they are releasing very little water to conserve for the dry months.

Citizens reporter must have been half asleep

And that is why they are building the 12 km long, 4 m diameter northern collector tunnel to tap water from 3 rivers (Maragua, Gikigie and Irati) and channel the same and store it in ndakaini....to ensure that the "ndakaini storage tank" always has water for nairobians to use..

In other words, your current roof isnt enough to fill your rainwater tank and therefore you have to connect a pipe to move water from another roof within your homestead to your current tank so that you can have sufficient water all year round.

Murangans are complaining that all the "warra" is going to Nairofi metro there's no balance. It curtails the potential of future irrigation and fish rearing projects. - Understandable.

It rains hard in Nairobi, the county should collect its water treat it and supply it to its residents.

Now that our media have seemingly nothing to do, why not follow up on this project and see the progress? Surely Nairobians should have no water shortages for the next 5 years with the current rains right?

In my opinion. There are people from muranga in the diaspora which is Nairobi and kajiado where the ndakaini waters are destined. Millions of muranga people have migrated to this areas and so together with other Kenyans they should not be left thirsty. Water should be "collected" from their home area and be brought to their door steps in kayole doonholm rongai kawangware kitengela and other areas.

I wish Citizen TV(not K24 because of its association with UMK, & KTN with its association with Mois) would do a followup on this project. We know the dam caused some houses to be flooded did these families get compensation? What is the infrastructure in place so far?

Does anyone know if the water tower in eastlands stores any water

Quote:
The US $66m World Bank-funded Northern Water Collector Tunnel that is under construction in Murang’a County, is expected to commence its operations by end of the year 2020. The tunnel is touted to solve Nairobi city’s water issues by increasing water supply to the city via Ndakaini dam to a capacity of 140 000m3/day,

Athi Water Services Board Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Mwangi Thuita while giving a group of engineers interested in the tunnel technology a tour on the site said that 89% excavation, which accounts to 11.4km out of the entire 12.7km, has been completed and the remaining 1.3km that shall connect Ichichi intake area of Kangema Sub-County to Ndakaini dam will be complete by the end of this year (2019).

Eng. Thuita added that after the tunneling work is done, they shall begin construction of a water treatment plant that will cost US $63m; and laying of pipelines from Ndakaini to Nairobi at a cost of US $45m. All this work will take at most one year to be complete.

If I'm correct, this is a pressurization tank to serve donholm and fedha, and should be operational if these areas receive kanju water...

Hii ni project ya The Northlands. Pesa ilishaenda, tuisahau. And the Iron King will ensure it's delivered on time.

By the way I'm thinking it's the one delaying ground breaking as I saw the sewer ("Ruiru Town Sewer SystemLaughing out loudly") is already completed.
