The cholera bacterium is usually found in water or food sources that have been contaminated by feces (poop) from a person infected with cholera. Cholera is most likely to be found and spread in places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene.

The last sentence is scary considering what is happening at the Nbi Hospital.

Cholera – transmitted when people ingest food or water contaminated with faecal matter containing cholera germs – can be deadly if not treated immediately.

A wedding last weekend turned tragic after one family member died and more than 40 guests fell ill from food poisoning and cholera.

At least 10 guests and family members are admitted in various Nairobi hospitals after testing positive to cholera.

Yesterday, at least three of them were admitted at Mater Hospital, three at Mama Lucy Hospital and four at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

You can add another outside catering firm called Pots Delight currently at least 10 of my close relatives are recovering in hospitals across Nairobi all suffering from a bout of Cholera after eating food at a house party over the same wkend of 10th August. Cholera is a disease last seen in some countries over 100 years ago. Here in Kenya cholera was unheard of in the 1990’s but as a people as developed as we may think we are in terms of health care we have regressed. There is no way any President can be walking around talking of billions going to Universal HealthCare coverage for all when a disease like cholera which is all about how you handle fecal matter is still killing people. Isnt it ironic that for all the development and rapid population growth in Kenya over the last 20 years or so no one has talked of building any sewer system. We have new buildings going over 30 floors up yet the sewer system built by the colonial mzungu and refurbished by Nyayo in the 1980’s is all Nairobi and Kenya has. Yet we somehow expect diseases like cholera will just disappear. Seriously i dont know what happened to us?
