VOK 1st August Attempted 1982 Coup announcement

Remember was on top of a lukwart tree busy competing with birds for the ripest. After December of the following year I was customarily banned from such behavior.
When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.

I was a kid. And every morning Mbotela would sit outside his house to tell us stories.

He wasn't there that day.

I saw my first gun. And of course they were very very very tall black men.

Later we went to Ngara and the shops were all open... Meaning ...My friends took a bike I took the chess board.

Later at night I saw death.

Death.

A lorry full of KAF would be driven on to our road. 3/4 of the lorry would be told to shuka chini!!!!


They would be shot hapo tu kwa barabara. The other 1/4 would be told...Rudisheni hawa kwa gari.


And that is how I spent the night of 1st August to 3rd August....I saw people being shot.

Alafu years later, I hear about Itumbilets and Alailets.
Thieves are not good people. Tumeelewana?

Hii ni thread ya wazee like me.

We were living in kapsabet,I could see several thatched huts on fire from my dads shoulders.Was small but the fear which engulfed me that evening is something that remains edged in my memory till date. We were leaving for Mombasa that same day.
The atmosphere was tense and unpredictable with helicopters hovering all over town.Felt like we were going to die in a fire..all of us. Argh it was bad.
A song kept blaring the whole day..'moi songa na mbele tujenga kenya yetu'

Was in the village deep in Migori county (we had just closed school and maize harvesting time was the focus) and the only connection with the 'kup' was radio. Initially really dint care until realized my big bro was working in Nairobi - got scared abit. Didn't affect me directly as much.

Lived near the Hare Krishna temple in Ngara/Parklands. My neighbor had kids at nairobi university and those guys spent that day and maybe the next one looting electronic shops with their University friends. I remember seeing guys in military uniform walking around carring big guns and my mom afraid of going to the kiosk for milk or opening the curtains.

I was the wanja kihii of the estate so was on top of a tree between branches picking jamnas for other kids.

Ghafla bin voo I saw my mum on a 100m dash running towards home.In panic I jumped down to find out what the issue was.

Woi we were all bundled I one room and asked not to make noise the government had been overthrown.

Then makifarus started patrolling the streets.

At home with a broken leg....just come from Kenyatta Hospital that morning where they put a cast on ...Fell off a mango tree in our compound....We lived in UpperHill ....On way home we saw 3 army land rovers near what was The Police Dog Section....My dad kept saying that is very odd...

Eastleigh section 3.was a nice clean organized hood and quite popular with bachelors.Someone dropped a large beautiful brand new suitcase. I grabbed it before cars could run over it and threw it under my bed. Silly action you may say coz I could have got myself killed if soldiers came calling. That xmas, the briefcase left Nairobi for shags and it has never left. Still exists and is as good as new. Very solid.

Schools were closed... And trees offered perfect playground for us kids...Tough Girls used to climb trees too unfazed.... with skirts and hemmed dresses.
And there was quencher juice then.. only Treetop.
