FY 2018-19 profits are going to be awful. FY 2019-20 1H looks bad. Low tea prices. Drought conditions last year. Excess - flooding/heavy vs good, steady, even rains - rains in some parts. Politics. Though, given the cyclical nature of this industry, I am staying out for now. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

Both WTK and KTC have cash in the bank. Even that is being a bit too optimistic; a 50% cut in dividend might perhaps suffice. Realistic in this scenario. Yet, this would still be a good yield. My thoughts.

The profits for 2018-19 might be the lowest seen in years! And 2019-20 is looking very weak for tea. Low, low prices at auction. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

By all means I didn't anticipate considering the performance outlook, but as they said, "persistent demand for higher dividend during times of good performance" made them decide to maintain last year's payout from retained earnings. Good stuff from these ever-pessimistic people!

Kapchorua now trading at a premium over the sibling (or is it parent?) WTK.
Those chasing dividend would be better of buying WTK, a sligtly higher yield. But then again, this is the market.

Six-month tea export earnings fall by Sh100m https://www.businessdail...1822-1cs4djz/index.html
It's going to be very, very ugly for WTK and KTC Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

I quote Kakuzi Plc Chairman’s Statement for the period of six months to 30 June 2019 Quote:Tea operations remain under pressure given the record volumes in the Kenyan market, coupled with political and currency volatility in some of our export markets. The outlook for tea this year is a concern. Quote:Whilst the Company is less exposed to tea the extreme decline in tea prices is of great concern. Average Mombasa tea prices have in recent months reduced to levels not seen for ten years.
