The cost of poultry feed in Kenya is crippling many farmers and driving them out of business, especially when coupled with low prices and imports from abroad:

This is a quote from a Kenyan farmer on Twitter this month:

"I think materials are not the only factor may be there are other supply of eggs from where I don't know coz in old days farmers used to survive but this tyme...I don't know whats happening"

My question is - why is poultry feed so expensive?

Will your chickens die or be underweight with a different feed formulation?

Are there local alternatives? Some alternative are shared here: https://thebigbookproject.org/knowledge-base/alternative-poultry-feed-ingredients/

I am hoping this thread will become a useful resource where ideas can be shared.

You should have put this thread under the other one headed "Starting A Poultry Farm"...IMO your articles are too lenghty(and "academic" for lack of a better description)..Its like being given a lecture..not many people like that..

Dear Chaka,

Thank you for you technical advice on a better thread heading - I'll bear this in mind.

Also, I GREATLY appreciate your advice on my current style of writing delivery in our online guides. Your opinion is both valid and valued.

I am currently developing a series of short (-er), sharp, to the point digestible, bite-sized snippets which offer immediate practical assistance.

It would be great that I could SHARE them with you when done (can I reach you by email? Your advice/opinion would be precious, if willing to stay in touch.)

In the meanwhile, if you want to ask any questions on the topic, please feel free to share...no matter how brief:

Good day Chaka, I hope you will find the answer to your question on BSFL a good read. We would appreciate all feedback and anymore of your thoughts and advice. The feed suggestions you added were all up to date and favoured by a variety of poultry nutritionists and vets - however the Black Soldier Fly Larvae is the stand out!

Warm regards,
