Man hacks to death medical student at Moi Referral, Eldoret

Ms Ivy Wangeci, a sixth-year medical student at the Moi University College of Health Sciences, was in killed in the most macabre manner in broad daylight witnessed by dozens of scared members of the public.

A man identified as Naftali Kinuthia pulled out an axe from a sack, hit her on the head, axed her head and cut her neck with a knife and let her die in front of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital on Tuesday morning.

He had earlier lured her out of the hospital where she was doing her practicals.

The anger which he displayed as he hacked her to death scared off dozens of people who rushed to the scene to rescue her.

He is said to have ensured she was dead before attempting to flee the murder scene.

SUSPECT HOSPITALISED

Irate members of the public aided by boda boda operators cornered him and beat him up.

The man is said to be an employee of a Nairobi-based betting firm.

It took the intervention of police officers to rescue him from the mob. He has been admitted to the same hospital.

When the Nation team visited the scene of the incident, there was a pool of blood with fellow students talking in hushed tones, yet to come to terms with the death of the promising student who was set to graduate in December.

Her belongings, including a pen, were still at the scene.

'NOTHING STRANGE'

The daring mid-morning attack outside the busy hospital brought business to a standstill as curious onlookers thronged the facility.

Mr Winston Akama, her colleague, said that he was with her after doing wards at the hospital.

“She was in high spirits and I didn’t see anything wrong with her. She was to see some patients after lunch. Sadly, this was not to be,” said Mr Akama.

The students said their colleague was always dedicated to her studies and there was nothing strange about her.

Mr Benethe Ananda, an eye witness said the assailant was smartly dressed and no one would have suspected him of ill motive based on his looks.

“He had a white sack. We only heard the lady’s cry later. We rushed to the scene and found her lying in a pool of blood moments later,” said Mr Ananda.

An uncle of the assailant, Mr Jotham Mwareri, said that the family was still in shock following the incident.

“He has all along been very dedicated to his work. We had not seen any strange behavior in him,” Mr Mwareri said of the computer science graduate.

'INSECURITY'

Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey had a tough time addressing the scared students who decried lack of accommodation at the university and are now fearing for their lives.

Prof Kosgey urged students to remain calm as the university liaises with security personnel.

“It’s indeed a very sad day. We will be updating all of us in time. We’ve been having issues of insecurity issues not only here but all over county. We’ve already notified her family over this unfortunate incident,” said Prof Kosgey.

Moi University School of Medicine Dean Lukoye Atwoli said the incident reflects on the general state of insecurity in Eldoret town.

“This is not the first case of such an incident occurring and we are counting on the police to get to the bottom of this and give us the full information. An attack of the student that happened on an open road really reflects on the general state of the security in town,” said Dr Lukoye.

Only few people can intervene in such a situation. Mostly people trained to fight and who can afford the inconvenience of the aftermath.

What a weakling of a man.
This is likely a case of inability to accept rejection.

That is one of 2 possibilities, that there is something wrong with this man. He is evil, he is weak etc.

The other possibility which is hard to explore is this, is there something that can make a good, normal human being do something like this? Every human being has an inbuilt capacity for extreme violence, what is it that triggers its expression in some people and not in others?

Ni nini alifanyiwa hadi akafikia hapo. It is one thing to hit someone out of anger, it is quite another to go into a shop buy a shoka, drive to the victims school, call her to come outside and then chinja her in broad daylight in front of everyone. What was his state of mind and what is it that could take one to that kind of state of mind?

May she RIP

If it's a matter of 'reasonableness test' then I doubt if he'll escape the hangman. The premeditation shown excludes him from temporary insanity or provocation.

In my opinion, ujinga and lack of a good strategy ndio imemalisa huyu jamaa. And it's what made him do what he did. HIV infection not withstanding.

The student, who requested not to be named, said the man had asked her to be his girlfriend and had even promised to marry her.

“Wangechi showed us the messages he had been sending to her expressing his love. She told us they were schoolmates in primary school but had lost touch until last year, when they met on Facebook,” the friend said on Tuesday.

They soon exchanged contacts and within no time he expressed his love for her, but Ms Wangechi told him off, promising him to be just a friend like all her former schoolmates.

However, Mr Kinuthia is said to have persisted. He sent her gifts and at one point bought her a phone. She wanted to return it but friends convinced her to use it instead.

When the stalking persisted, Ms Wangechi changed her phone number in January. But the man managed to get her new number and picked up from where he had left off.

It is not known what happened between then and Tuesday, when the man, who was said to be working for a betting company in Nairobi, killed her

Accepting the gift was a big mistake and our girls should know there is nothing for free. But this boy was disturbed, there is just some 'dark cloud' behind his action.

Long post alert.

MY STATEMENT ON WHAT HAPPENED TO IVY WANGECI, MY CLASSMATE AT MOI UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.

I'm writing this because all the rumours going round are horrible and they hurt us as her friends.
I've already shared this on my Twitter, its going rounds and I feel like I should post it here too.

OBSESSION & DARK DESIRES: MY STATEMENT ON MY CLASSMATE, IVY WANGECI, AT MOI UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, KILLED BY A STALKER

It’s a sad day in our school, losing a classmate, a friend and finalist with just months left for her to complete her degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBCHB). Just this morning. Moreover, tomorrow (10/04/2019) is her birthday. Whats even sadder, is all the rumours that the bloggers are spreading, and the wrong messages going rounds on social media that are tainting Ivy’s good name.

From Ivy’s closest friends, Ivy had known the person who killed her, a 28 yr old Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, since childhood, and that he has been pestering Ivy to be his girlfriend, since childhood, and Ivy constantly refused. Ivy had been complaining that He had been stalking her, for a while now. The stories going rounds that they had dated and that she infected him with HIV/AIDS are just fabrications by people to try and make their stories more interesting for the public to click on their blogs. Infact, the information from the close best friends is that Ivy never had any romantic affiliations to the assailant, let alone even dating that person. Moreover, the guy, according to the close friends, wasn’t even Ivy’s type. Ivy had a romantic interest in school, a classmate, and they were together all the time, so all of you guys claiming she was dating this monster who killed her are just absurd.

The Monster who killed her, allegedly travelled all the way from Nairobi, in a car, with an axe and a knife, he allegedly had a friend driving the car, he alighted from the car, ran towards and maimed Ivy with the axe, a friend tried to help Ivy, but the killer aimed the axe at him and he fell in an attempt to defend himself, the killer then went ahead and maimed Ivy severally then he ran away and he was caught by bodaboda guys and roughed up. All this happened at 10-11 am in the morning, today, 9/04/2019.

This monster has killed a daughter, a sister, a friend, a loving classmate, a brilliant doctor to be, with just months left to finish school. As her friend, I am mourning. As a class, we are devastated on how someone can do such a heinous act.

There are some blogs claiming she was not a good student that’s why she is in the 7th yr of a 6th yr course, that she had deferred school for one year to be with the guy, this is a terrible sickening, horrendous, appalling gruesome lie aimed at tainting Ivy’s name. The whole 6th yr medical class has been delayed for one year because of the strikes we had in the last two years (Doctors strike, Nurses strike, Lectures strike) so all of us, as 6th yrs, are in our 7th year of medical school. Even the entire 2016/2017 class that just graduated in December 2018, spent 7 years in school.

In conclusion, claiming that Ivy was killed in a love triangle is a lie, that she dated the killer is a lie, that she infected him with HIV/AIDS is a lie, that Ivy had stayed with the guy for a year is a lie, that she deferred school to be with the guy is a lie, that the guy has been paying school fees for her is a lie. Ivy Wangeci a victim of a stalker who couldn’t take no for an answer. She is a victim. Stop spreading horrible rumours about her. It hurts us as a her classmates, friends and family as the bloggers keep spreading all this rumours and tainting her good image.

Signed.
A 6th year Medical student, at MOI UNIVERSITY

To add, the guy has been stalking her for quite some time, she blocked her but it didn’t work as such, the guy kept coming. She even had to change her number just so she can get some peace. Having known the killer from childhood, she (Ivy) had decided to to tell the mutual friends they have to inform the stalker that she was engaged, just so that she can have some peace and for this guy to finally give up and leave her alone. Then the monster came to take her away from us .

She was such a hard worker, a good student and an amazing doctor to be. She stayed late taking care of patients, diligently followed up on them, stop spreading malicious rumours about her. She was not a 'slay-queen' she was a doctor to be. Put some RESPECT to her name.

What high level ojinga are the mother and brother of this stupid man advancing?

from Sub-Standard Newspaper >>>>>>>>>>

A university student who was hacked to death in Eldoret was romantically involved with a 29-year-old man suspected of killing her, a woman has claimed.

The woman, who claimed to be the suspect’s mother, told The Standard her son had on numerous occasions showed her photos of the victim, Ivy Wangechi.

Ms Wangechi was slashed to death yesterday outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret, as she walked with her friends.

“They had been in a relationship even before my son got a job and the woman joined school. He even wanted to marry her, but it seems they began having issues,” the woman said.

She added: “I have never met the lady, but he used to show me her photos on phone... but recently, he came to me saying they had parted ways, a move which I told him was in the right direction because of their relationship issues.”

The woman said her son had never shown signs of being temperamental to the extent of killing someone and she was shocked by the incident.

“It is so unusual of him because he cannot do such an act. What perturbs me is that he did not share with anyone about his trip to Eldoret, yet we were with him yesterday in Nairobi at 8pm and he had not closed shop at a business where he works,” she said.

She suggested that the two might have tried to work out their differences before the incident.

“He is my firstborn son and he has been working hard to earn a living. I am yet to come to terms with what he did. His father and uncle are on their way to Eldoret to piece up details of the incident,” she said yesterday.

The suspect’s brother, a patient at MTRH, confirmed there having been a relationship between the killer and Wangechi.

“I have never met her, but my eldest brother used to speak about her saying she is in Eldoret. He had photos of them in his phone,” he claimed.

The suspect is said to have hacked Wangechi with an axe and a knife. The student succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

According to witnesses, Wangechi finished doing ward rounds at MTRH at about 10am and she left the facility in the company of her friends when the assailant accosted her from behind.

The assailant cut her on the neck using a knife and when boda boda operators who were nearby tried to intervene, he fished out an axe from a white gunny bag.
