These mother tongue languages serve no purpose other than to divide Kenyans along tribal lines. I still insist that they should all be done away with for a more cohesive nation. We only need to stick with Kiswahili and English.

The reason why we have idiots as our leaders today is because of tribes. Were there no tribes, our leaders would be in big trouble because we would then have to vote for people based on things like honesty, susbstance and integrity.

I really hate it when someone addresses me in Kikuyu (my mother tongue) especially when am in the company of non-Kikuyu speaking people. It’s very very primitive. The stupid languages are more detrimental than they are productive. We should ban them all. Takataka tribes.

There are but at least in developed countries, they don’t capitalize on their tribe to get elected. They get elected based off of issues affecting their countries and whether the leaders there turn out to be idiots or not, at least it’s subjective idiocy. There is nothing subjective about tribe, it’s black and white, Kikuyu wins in Central regardless of whether he adds any value to the people or not and Luo wins in Nyanza and on and on. Complete nonsense. Without tribes, most leaders in Kenya would have to prove their worth in order to get elected.....tall order and which as we know, would end up wiping out almost all these incompetent leaders we have today. Tribes don’t add any value to our country at all. They are useless and primitive. Whenever anybody addresses me in Kikuyu I answer in Swahili or English. I am a Kenyan I don’t do that tribe crap.

You're mixing up 2 things: tribe & language.

We were on language. Why didn't a single language save Rwanda from the genocide? Burundi? Somalia?

I strongly believe that while tribe can divide people, having people from different tribes speak one language and kill their mother tongues doesn't help a bit in cohesion. People who are tribal while speaking their mother tongue will be tribal when speaking one national language!!

Hate comes from "they're different from us", "they're inferior" not "they speak a funny language". Look at it, even within tribes people searching hard for differences between this and that Somali/Maasai clan, Kiambu Kikuyu vs Nyeri Kikuyu etc. Most of these stupidities are passed down through stereotypes. Speaking English & French won't change it a bit!

Maybe intermarriage would!

I find this discussion interesting! People mistake ethnic groups and ethnic identity with negative ethnicity. They think that is the cause. Tanzania has more ethnic groups than us but less ethnicity. As aptly noted - the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa people of Rwanda all spoke one language! kinyarwanda.

Mathenge, I know you have bile with me because I question your hero Waiguru’s integrity and it rubs you the wrong way. I am all for integrity my guy if a politician is crooked they are crooked. Period.

I asked you a simple question about Waiguru. How did she afford to buy a 120 million home in Kihingo plus a 20 million Aston Martin car for her son? She had only been CS for less than 3 years and she was magically able to afford all these? Am sure there is more property she acquired but these are the two that we all know about. Can you explain to me how she acquired such wealth in such a short time?

You get riled by the truth because you don’t want to hear the truth. These people are stealing your kids future and you are on the frontline cheering them on. Dude, people have to be held accountable for their actions. If somebody stole public money they need to be prosecuted and have their property and money seized. It’s as simple as that. People who support known looters like Waiguru and Ruto clearly demonstrate the type of people that they themselves are. Scambags. No other way to describe them. Birds of a feather flock together. You can’t support somebody who the whole world knows that they grabbed airport land to build a hotel on. Don’t you people have a conscience or is it that you are just as sociopathic as these rogue leaders you support? Your hero Waiguru couldn’t afford a house in Kihingo within three years of being a CS, the hell is wrong with you?

Yes they spoke Kinyarwanda but the genocide was still based off of tribe. Hutus versus Tutis. If they only had one language then there would never had been any Hutus slaughtering Tutsis because there would never had been any Hutus or Tutsis to begin with, only the Nyarwanda.

Even if we were one tribe we'd still have bad leaders. Samburu governor Lenolkulal is facing charges of grand theft in a county mostly populated by his tribe.

Can you imagine an englishman, frenchman, polishman, japanese etc abandoning his mother tongue and adopting a foreign language like spanish or russian, kikuyu? Then why should a kikuyuman deep in central abandon his mother tongue, the language of his people and adopt the language of his colonial masters who live thousands of miles away?

there is no 'kiTutsi' or 'kiHutu'. To you - language is the mark of 'tribe'

Because a Kikuyuman is fighting a Luoman over trivial tribal differences. The Frenchman is not fighting another Frenchman along tribal lines. If we only spoke Swahili in Kenya, do you think we would have all these tribal clashes? Wouldn’t it not be easier for a previously Kikuyuman man who now only speaks Swahili and only identifies himself as a Kenyan and not Kikuyu, to be able to buy land in Ugenya and settle there? How has that Kikuyu helped that Kikuyuman other than having him and his tribesmen get slaughtered in Rift Valley every election time?

I shocked some very rich Kikuyu wazee one time when we were to enter into a business deal. We had a meeting where they started telling me in Kikuyu how us Kikuyu need to support each other and make sure we protect our wealth and not entertain other tribes who want to do business with us. I told them right in their faces that I will not be part of that because I am not a bigot. I do businesss with everybody and I have friends from all tribes and I will never ever even for one minute betray my friends and business partners from other tribes by scheming to bring them down behind their backs. Needless to say, the wazees didn’t give me the business but I didn’t care because after the dust settled, I could still hold my head up high with my pride as a Kenyan. Tribes are a cancer whether you guys want to admit it or not. They do more harm than they do good.

Yes, unfortunately.

Your tribe is not just the language. As pointed out earlier, there's no Kihutu & Kitutsi in Rwanda/Burundi. It's just one language-Kinyarwanda/Kirundi. The same with Somalis. Even Kenyan Somalis are known to slaughter each other on basis of clan.

Remember also that apart from language, there are many other things that identify you by your ethnicity. Chief among them is facial & other physical features. Even if we decreed today that we'll only speak Kiswahili everywhere even in our homes, people will still identify you by your looks which you can't change even with your English/Swa.

So why don’t the Canadians or French slaughter each other? They only speak one language.

Somali clans are essentially their tribes. Clans are even worse than tribes because they are more primitive. You don’t see these tribal clashes nonsense in Sweden or Denmark. Why?

I have never spoken my mother tongue, mostly because I can’t speak it even though I understand it. I basically only speak English and Swahili. How has not knowing my mother tongue affected me? Am happy and content with my life minus the mother tongue. How would being able to speak Kikuyu have benefitted my life?

A language is a worldview. If you were born in a certain language and then discarded the language then you've cut off a huge chunk of your sensibility.

Tribal clashes as depicted on this thread are because of European meddling and African political choices in response to the meddling.

Am personally very proud of my tribe and will do all i can to make sure my children learn to speak and appreciate their tradition.
As a parent, am instilling virtues that will integrate my children with society no matter the tribe or economic status. Am playing my part as a parent.

@Hamburglar
Am so sorry for you. You have no sence of belonging!
Will pray for you all the same and any other like minded individuals on this forum.

Don’t need your prayers and you don’t need to feel sorry for me for not knowing how to speak Kikuyu. Why would you feel sorry for me? What the hell? It’s not like I don’t have arms and legs for you to feel sorry for
me. Jesus, not knowing my mother tongue is now a handicap that needs prayers? The level of stupidity for some religious Kenyans is amazing. What exactly would you be praying for me for? I don’t get it.

Does it mean that you can’t instill moral virtues into children who don’t speak your mother tongue? Wonders never cease.

Those children that you are teaching your mother tongue might very well turn out to be the wazees like the ones I met that are disgustingly tribal. Am glad my parents never taught me Kikuyu, the little I know I learnt here and there. Maybe that’s why I am very uncomfortable around people who speak Kikuyu or Luo or whatever language in the presence of people from other tribes. How isn’t that not ignorant? People who’ve approached me with that Kikuyu shit know better next time they meet me. I don’t mince my words, I tell them to cut that shit out and sure enough, when we meet again, they always remember to speak in Swahili or English, a language that everybody around us understands.
