Nurses at Pumwani Maternity Hospital have lifted the lid on the challenges they face in their line of duty in the wake of the death of 12 babies at the facility.

The health workers complained of consultants failing to report to work, malfunctioning equipment, lack of promotions, inadequate personnel, and managers' high-handedness.

"We have a problem with the consultants who never come to work and once they arrive they work for an hour," a nurse said.

They cited cases of mothers who spend nearly two weeks waiting for consultants to undertake Cesarean section deliveries.

The nurses complained that they are the ones who are always punished for cases of negligence involving the absentee doctors.

Pumwani hospital has 162 nurses but the labour ward has less than 20 who work in shifts. They also complained of an imbalance in the shift workloads.

The nurses further complained that despite being in touch with the mothers, they are never consulted or involved in the management.

It was reported that the facility's six CSSD machines, used for sterilising theatre equipment, had not worked since Friday.

The nurses had threatened not to admit mothers at the facility if they will not be provided with the equipment to help with the deliveries.

The hospital does not have an ambulance as they were withdrawn by the county government, further hindering the referral of cases.

Apart from the nurses' grievances, the hospital suffers a shortage of beds after two wards were closed for lack of staff. Mothers are, therefore, forced to share beds.

The hospital's elevators have not worked since 2013.

Health officials in Nairobi have differed with Governor Mike Sonko's take on the sorry state of affairs at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

Veska Kangogo however admitted, at a press conference held at the facility over the discovery of bodies of 11 infants, that the facility has infrastructural challenges.

The acting Health executive said the hospital lacks cold storage facilities to preserve bodies and ambulances, a situation she said the county is keen on changing.

She said the room where the bodies of 11 infants were found is designated for the purpose of holding them in wait for transport to the mortuary.

"It was at the designated room where the infants were found. They are always put in a polythene bag as was the case."

Kangogo added that the bodies are normally taken to the mortuary on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The hospital has maintained that none of the children, highlighted during the governors' raid, were a case of emergency mishaps.

The managers said the deaths were normal and called for patience with the DCI, medical board, and Health ministry probe into the incident.

Health chief officer Mahat Jimale said the county will work to restore sanity at Pumwani, which is a preferred hospital for mothers across the country.

"I demystify claims that some bodies are not from the hospital. The truth is that we can account for every child found yesterday with the tagging and notifications of deaths."

Mahat said that out of 11 deaths that happened between September 11 to 17, there were successful 244 deliveries.

"Out of the 11 deaths, fresh new births were four which had low kilograms and no heart rates. Two died out of obstructed labour," he said.

He added that two were macerated stillbirths, two were prenatal deaths, while the 11th was brought out when already dead."

On Monday, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko discovered the bodies of infants stuffed in boxes at the hospital.

6 and 11 is a big difference they said the extra 1 baby was brought to the hospital by a member of the public for disposal.

Surely will doctors be able to continue offering services to the best of their abilities and under difficult circumstances when they are being condemned and demonised like this? Did I also hear Sonko threatening to slap one of the medical staff? This is like your boss walking to your desk and giving you a dressing down infront of your colleagues. That is is very wrong. A good manager should call you to the office and ask you to give an explanation of whatever the issue is. Zonko is proof of shida ya picking some barely literate ruffian, a prison escapee, to be governor. That is why he is operating Idi Amin style. What our doctors, midwifes need is encouragement and support, not ridicule and public lynching. Remember there is a saying that goes "usitukane mkunga kama uzazi ungalipo".

Govt should insist on one man having one job. We shouldn't have a situation where a doctor appears for just 1hr and then leaves while there are 50 women on the queue waiting to be attended to.

Sonko duped you all. He apparently had a ready cooler to 'donate' to Pumwani hospital.

The Gov of Nairobi should not be donating anything, that should be on Pumwani Hosp budget

The dead give-away was the immediate appointment of a new board and the sacking of county secretary, Kariuki. Considering he received a tip that forced him to land there immediately, how comes he already had names of new board members ? This script looks like coming from Singh. There could be a huge tender coming up at Pumwani. If today Sonko announced a Kes 1B project to upgrade Pumwani, everyone would be willing to support him. And all the uncooperative officers have been kicked out. But such foresight and planning is way beyond the buffoon's mental capacity.

He sacked the County Sec because s/he rushed there to clean up a mess that was in the process of investigation. The board is not a hard pick a few doctors names here and there cannot be hard to get.

Pumwani has had a budget(s) and am sure there have been allocations of body bags and cooling sytems/rooms before why is this not being interrogated? Why are we acting like Kidero did not spend money on this hospital a while ago? In 2013, he launched a computerized record keeping system why is it that 5 years down the line, we are still confused on how many babies died at the hospital last week? Let us not act as if we live in a vacuum, the Gov should not be donating any equipment to the facility.

I talked too soon. Sonko hospital it is. Complete with architectural drawings in a record three days. Makes me wonder just how daft sonko belives his supporters are.

AKUH to provide doctors and nurses for two years at no cost. Curious because on JKL sonko said pumwani is not under-staffed. Truth is sonko never met anyone from AKUH but he knows his supporters are too slow to add two and two together. He also knows our media is hopelessly incompetent and nobody will ask these him questions.

A few months ago, he said he had held a meeting with an Italian investor who would clean up dandora dumpsite and use the waste to generate electricity. You should have seen his supporters on facebook. The clean-up was to start december last year. Of course guys at city hall know he hadn't met any investor.
