I usually find it rather predictable when a random foreigner calls us "monkeys" (I think the appropriate word is "apes" but what can you expect from an unschooled chinaman?... "monkey" it is) THEN one who has been monikered a "monkey" thinks... that's not so bad... "we" do much worse things to our neighbours. They don't realise that it's a dignity play... it's one thing to say that we are DIRTY, SMELLY, POOR, FOOLISH people. That we can work on... we cannot work on not being a "monkey"

Who is WE? in the group of WE not being uncivilized... I will create a "we" that is WE without ME and call it "we". So "we" do like throwing bottles of water and soft drinks out of the cars or when just walking then blame "poor" chinese workmanship because they built roads without drainage.
"We" also tend feed animals in game parks - totally disregarding "do not feed the animals" notices. "We" also drive like rude maniacs. I have been around the park a bit and have seen really "uncivilized" behaviour... pooping on beaches and pissing on walls by our african brothers. Heck I heard a story of indians in Delhi who used to piss to much on a university wall despite all attempts to stop them from pissing on it but they only stopped after images of their Gods were painted on the wall. We read about all the rape stories in New Delhi... so it means being "uncivilized" is an aspect of culture - it can change! but can you rescue yourself and your kids from being called Monkeys? look around your house right now.. see all your babies running around and know that the chinaman called them "monkeys"... they cannot do anything in his eyes to rescue themselves from their monkey state... they can do anything but because they were born by monkeys... nothing can change.

I used to be optimistic like you Masukuma and thought that culture can change but the more I live and see and learn the more pessimistic I get. The biggest driver of change of culture was oppression more specifically colonialism and forceful conversion into religion be it christianity or Islam. Now that the whole world has rights every "uncivilized" behavior has its defenders. In the name of diversity anything and everything goes.

I prefer to look at it as a really difficult job vs an impossible job. Culture changes... it's not easy to change it but it changeable... compared to say genes... you will never be anything other than a mwafrika and your kids as well. it's also a matter of taking responsibility. if you accept things as they are or "kuwachia Mungu" - you are being irresponsible! get in there and do something... say something. I have a neighbour who refers to himself as the mad man... because mad men pick papers and he cannot stand seeing pieces of rubbish around his neighbourhood... Yeye ameamua... Anyone who has read Wangari Maathai's biography realised that there was no "big moment" but rather a bunch of small courageous decisions that made the woman what she became. Small everyday choices, consistently and diligently applied - add up!

Kenyans need to develop a thick skin.
If you get annoyed or upset every time someone thinks or says something racist or negative of you, you will have a heart attack every 2 seconds. Racism, tribalism, sectarianism and so on are just elements of human nature in a fallen world.
You cannot control what someone else thinks of you.
Like politics, think of INTERESTS and not EMOTIONS. In your emotions, if you chase and close down this company because someone thinks you are a monkey, you may put 1000 people out of work and will not change the young Chinese man's mind about you.
The same thing happened to many African Americans in USA after slavery. They have been crying racism to this day, blaming it for everything including their own poverty, yet funnily enough, young immigrant blacks from Africa and the Caribbean who go there and do not share the same sentiments get ahead very fast because they work hard and obey the law for the most part. And the African Americans end up saying blacks from Africa and the Caribbean are "favoured" while they (African Americans) are cursed by racism! That does not even make sense! Compare also with the Jews who were fried by Hitler in an event far worse than slavery IMHO. They bounced back fast from the ghettos they were confined in, even in New York for Eastern European Jews, rising fast from their own sweat and leaving those ghettos for the blacks who are still there to this day using racism as an excuse for failure.
Sticks and stones break bones, words do not cut or punch unless your skin is not thick and a man can destroy your ego by calling you a monkey or a dragon fly or an ant. If you know you are not those things, why does it bother you so much?

It's one thing to not put up with racist remarks and observations (especially in your own backyard) and another to use historical injustices as an excuse to not being responsible for your own destiny in a free world. Two totally different things. No one should accept or put up with people who insult their dignity - NO ONE! my dignity is not up for discussion... the dignity of my children is not up for discussion. You can think what you want but just know that there will be consequences when you tell me to my face and in my house that you think I am sub human. Not stomaching this is not to be confused with not acting like a grown-up and fighting for my own bread and being responsible for my family.
