Woohoo!

Kusema na kutenda

The government is truly firing on all cylinders now. Things are now reaching critical mass: war on impunity, infrastructure boom, SGR eventual completion to Kisumu. Can't wait for more development ahead!

Just this week alone Llongyani line will be energised, pumping in well over 300MW into the gird. The sweetest part of it is that and it has fiber optic link. Pray Which means fibre will be nywee in the entire region once Ethiopia and SSD are connected. Ketraco will also have a decent income source without having to depend on treasury.

Two new geothermal projects announced as in the pipeline

JKIA to Kangemi expressway (and so much more) negotiated for in China as part of the $60B goodies allocated during FOCAC!

Dustbowl is benefitting big from all these initiatives Drool

Roads construction continues at rapid clip

God bless Kenya!

Hizo lazima ziangushwe.... I think people thought the road will never be expanded hence encroached seriously even that Siron place looks suspect... Watu wataumia...

No cause for alarm. These are just negotiating tactics to get the best deal. Remember that the One Belt One Road Initiative is actually China's baby. For us in Kenya, since 60-70% of Mombasa cargo imported terminates in Nairobi (the rest to EAC and beyond), and we plan Industrial parks in Olkaria (cheap geothermal power supply) and Suswa, Phase 2A would be adequate for our needs even if it does not end up in Kisumu. China has more of a vested interest in extending the line to not just Uganda and Rwanda-Burundi but to the rich mineral pickings of DRC. So let them shoulder some of the burden as this is a REGIONAL project in China's strategic interest. I am sure by the time 2A is ready, an amicable solution will be in place that will be a win-win for all parties.

Dont be misled into thinking that the LOIANGALANI SUSWA line has been energized!!!...day dream...the CS took journalists there to fool them..only one circuit is complete....the line is a double circuit 400KV . The generator(LTWP) can not eveacuate power through the single cirtuit while works still ongoing on the other circuit. Siemens are still testing the Teriminal susbstations...the 300MW are not coming cheap...there will be additional passthrough costs to the consumers....Intergration of intermittent sources of energy into the grid will be expensive ....the earliest the line will be commissioned is End of September 2018...EARLIEST

Which is fine too. Doesn't make much of a difference to me. The important thing is that LTWP will finally come online and the power pools in the region can finally start to get integrated. Will be lovely to be able to buy cheap power from GERD once they are done. Or sell some overcapacity to Rwanda, Tanzania or even as far as Zambia once all our power pools are connected! And hopefully, on the local front, power blackouts will diminish drastically with time. Good times ahead in the coming years IMHO

Good and Poor analogy.....the LOIANGALANI SUSWA LINE will not form part of the inegration...There is a parralel line 500 KV DC line from ethiopia to Suswa then to the ketraco lines all the way to TZ...There is nothing like cheap power that will come...LTWP will cause the power yield to increase from around 11.9 shillings to 14 shillings(what you are paying now, why the tariffs were increased last month)....The PPA with rwanda is only 30MW

You are contradicting yourself and missing the bigger point my braddah.

1. Are our power pools getting integrated or not?
2. Are we exporting power or not?

From your own post above, clearly both points above are in the affirmative.

As for cheaper power, please give us a breakdown of geo costs per unit verses wind, verses hydro, versus diesel, ceteris paribus and then revert.

The markets are getting integrated YES.
Right now we are not exporting power. Ethiopia will be exporting power to Kenya (400MW) take or pay, and to TZ. Kenya signed a 30MW to supply rwanda but there is no transmisson line from olkaria to kisumu...
COSTS
The current Hydro plants from KenGen are the cheapest(because they have been armotized fully, there original PPAs expired and were refurbished for additional life) they go at 3 shillings, except those in Sangoro and Sonu Mirio(Recent projects)....other private Hydors like those under Feed in Tariff go for 12 shillings(though their capacity are small)

Geothermal levelized tariff range between 7 to 8 shilings for new projects....

Lake turkana wind will be around 8 shillings

other wind projects like KenGen are at 12 shilings. solar range between 9 and 12 shillings per kwh then Thermal go way upto 18 shillings...

Great info. I was under the impression that we were exporting power. Regardless, once the infrastructure is in place it would be a great asset IMHO to be able to export and import throughout the linked power pools so that every country can benefit from the least cost available.

Asante! Last time I checked we still had some thermal input. So LTWP coming on tap at 8 bob is a huge savings compared to thermal that (hopefully) can dislodge thermal in the long run. All in all I think the government is doing all the RIGHT things to move our energy mix and power linkages forward and LWTP and the Llogiyani (i can never spell this thing right smile) line are part of that great leap forward. But whatever happened to the Kinangop Wind plant? Any hope of it being revived in our lifetime?

Kinangop wind power, is dead. The financiers (Stanbic bank) repossesed the turbines ready for auction to recover their loans...however they have a tacit agreement with the GoK that the buyers of the turbines will put up a similar plant near the location. the Sponsors and the EPC contractors had taked the Government to ICC(International Chamber of Commerce London) seeking huge sums of money...but earlier this year, the government won the case.

The problem with Kingapo was how they handled the land owners. The location, where there we so many small holders with tiny pieces of land was inherent with problems. Compare it with Kipeto Energy in Kajiado where land is massive and owned by a few and its becomes much easier to deal

Our land ownership systems and dealing with public participation are a major hindrance to projects that are land dependent.

It is official, finally.

Chinese contractor Synohydro has won the tender to dual the Bomas-Ongata Rongai-Kona Baridi stretch in a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion within the city.
