Kenya beating African peers in mobile subscription growth

Link

By 2025, Kenya is forecast to have 35.1 million unique mobile subscribers from 29.6 million in 2017, equivalent to 5.5 per cent of the Sub-Sahara Africa subscriber base. A unique subscriber is an individual who might have multiple network connections. The feat will be mostly achieved by capitalising on populous yet unexploited rural markets, a fresh mobile economy report shows.

Africa
From 2017 to 2025, 2G will decrease from 66 per cent to 11 per cent, 3G will double from 30 per cent to 63 per cent, while 4G will increase significantly from a paltry one per cent to 25 per cent.

However, 5G will record snail pace growth from the current zero to one per cent by 2025.

Smartphone adoption will triple from 22 per cent to 63 per cent within the seven years.

The report forecasts that there will be a whopping 634 million unique mobile subscribers across Sub-Sahara Africa by 2025, equivalent to 52 per cent of the total population, placing Kenya ahead of the pack in the growth.

MPs put five top managers of telecommunications firms on the spot over their push for parliamentary intervention to amend the law to regulate market dominance and declare Safaricom

dominant.

The National Assembly’s ICT committee members dismissed the telcos plea seeking to declare one operator dominant.

Safaricom dwarfs its top rivals, Bharti Airtel and Telkom Kenya, and smaller operators have long argued that it enjoys a dominant position because it accounts for 90 per cent of revenues in areas such as voice calls and text messages.

The committee chaired by William Kisang separately questioned Telkom Kenya chief executive Aldo Merause, Aritel’s Prasanta Das Sarma, Joshua Chepkwony (Jamii) and Liquid general manager for legal Judy Njeru over the dominance claims.

Uriri MP Mark Nyamita accused Airtel and Telkom of being out of touch with market realities, poor infrastructure and expansion planning and lacking in customer care.

“You have changed hands frequently and that affects your strategic direction. As a former Airtel employee, I know that Airtel suffers because of the missteps of its predecessors, starting from KenCell,” Mr Nyamita said.

Communications Authority of Kenya early this year ditched a proposal to break Safaricom up into separate telecoms and financial services businesses due to its dominant size.

An initial draft report on boosting competition in the sector, which was leaked in February 2017, had recommended the break up of the firm that is Kenya’s biggest by market value.

Safaricom

chief executive Bob Collymore appeared Monday morning before parliament's ICT committee, marking his first public event after a long absence.

The National Assembly team is looking into telcos dominance in the Kenyan market that has seen top managers of telecommunications firms appear before legislators amid a push by competitors to have Safaricom declared dominant.

Mr Collymore, who had stepped away from the firm's helm for 9 months to seek treatment for an undisclosed illness, thanked well wishers for their support

"Let's take the instance of home fiber,an area we have just ventured into, despite the many players in the sub-sector.By employing our expertise....in two years time,we shall be extremely successful and someone will say that there is a new market in which safaricom is already dominant, yet we can all start now and create this sub-sector"

Very true... Zuku had a headstart for years, Orange/Telkom have had the infrastructure for the longest time, JTL spent so much on ads without having the service ready for consumption and Airtel just never invest. They will all soon complain

"Why would we continue to invest in rolling out an efficient network if our competitors for whom we host are not under the same obligation to roll out?... A couple of weeks ago, there was an outage caused by a cut in the Nothern Kenya fibre managed by Telkom" 🤓Bob Collymore
